Although I consider myself to be the sort of person that enjoys trying new things (especially beauty products), I wasn't quick to jump on the mineral makeup bandwagon. Maybe it was because I was happy with my foundation routine (Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer). Why ruin a good thing?
Until this summer. Spending every weekend outside (painting our house) brought on a tan- even with the diligent application of sunblock. I have always been proudly pale, which is pretty easy to shop for when it comes to foundation (lightest shade!). Suddenly I had to figure out a foundation to even out my ruddy cheeks (and cover up those acne scars) until my skin shade returned back to ghostly.
Knowing that whatever foundation I chose I wouldn't be using for long, I decided to go cheap. Kohl's has a great line of cosmetics, with foundations around $15. While I was happy with the color, I just wasn't quite happy with the formulation (much to moisturizing for my skin!).
Which is what led me to eventually try L'Oreal Bare Natural Mineral Makeup. I happened to be in Walgreens when I noticed they were having a Buy One Get One for 50% off sale on L'Oreal cosmetics. The deal was sealed. I plunked down $14.99 and couldn't wait to give it a try.

What I found:
Shade selection:
I've always avoided drugstore foundations because it was so hard to find a match without sampling. Often the darkest shade would be too dark or too orange for my skin. The last time I used a drugstore foundation had to be close to 10 years ago, just as I was entering high school.
I was pleased to find out that L'Oreal offers this product in a wide range of shades: Soft Ivory, Light Ivory, Nude Beige, Creamy Natural, Natural Beige, Buff Beige, Sun Beige, Classic Tan, and Cocoa. Although I had a light tan at the time, I figured I'd go with the lightest shade, Soft Ivory, recalling the days of too dark drugstore makeup.
I was shocked when I applied it the first time- if anything, it was almost too light! I knew it was going to be perfect as my light tan faded.
Packaging:
Bare Naturale Mineral Makeup comes in a plastic jar with a screw top lid. The jar houses .35 oz of product. Included in the lid is a separate lid that has a foundation brush. Although it doesn't seem to be as cheap as most brushes that are included in the packaging, I still prefer to use my own brush to apply.
The product comes out through a series of holes, like a sifter (and like most powder products).
Application:
To apply Bare Naturale Mineral Makeup, I tip the jar on it's side (with the lid on) to allow some product to fall through the holes. I then dip my brush (a big fluffy powder brush, I know some people like to use kabuki brushes but this is my favorite) into the powder. I only need a little bit because it really goes a long way, plus I don't want to apply too much to an area.
I then swirl my brush onto my skin. I usually start with my nose, because my nose tends to be the ruddiest, then onto my cheeks (which are also ruddy). I blend, blend, blend, because I want the powder to meld and not sit on top of my skin. Really, application is very simple. I was scared that I'd apply too much and end up with a mask, but have found that to be almost impossible.
The powder itself is very fine, and almost has a moist texture as it's applied to the skin (rather than dry and powdery like many translucent setting powders).
Wear:
What I like best about Bare Naturale Mineral Makeup is that it looks natural and lasts all day. The coverage makes my skin look even toned and radiant without looking heavy or fake. Some reviews I've read have mentioned that it tends to exacerbate dry areas- I haven't had a problem with this yet. I do have a few dry patches around my nose that always acted up when I used liquid foundation (no matter the formula). So far, they're far less noticable using Bare Naturale Mineral Makeup. However, I've only been using this product for a few months. Often I'll develop dry patches on my forehead in the winter months, so we'll see what happens then and I'll update if necessary.
Cons:
The only con I can find is that it is a little pricey for a drugstore foundation ($14.99). The only other con (which really isn't a con to me) is that some people have pointed out that it's not true mineral foundation. I generally don't have problems with makeup breaking me out, but if you have sensitive skin you might want to be cautioned.
The Bottom Line:
I never thought I'd be a mineral makeup convert, but I'm glad I gave L'Oreal Bare Naturale Mineral Makeup a try. I believe it's an excellent foundation at a drugstore price!
