Pros:Fun, campy vampire flick with a lot of the charm of the original.
Cons:It's not the original.
The Bottom Line: Lost Boys is a classic. This one missed that status, but it comes close. A great homage, and possibly the start of something new. 3 and half stars

Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.

The Lost Boys: The Tribe. (2008) Directed by P. J. Pesce

”I'm Edgar Frog, surfboard shaper and vampire hunter.”

David Von Etten has it all; a beautiful seaside home, money to burn, and immortality. He is a vampire, and that makes him the baddest thing in the night, right?

Well, when a group of surfers invade his beach for a moonlight surf, he sets out to run them off. Here is what is scarier than a vampire: four vampires with no self control.

So now the vampire tribe has a nice house to party in.

Chris Emmerson and his sister Nicole arrive in town after the tragic death of their parents to hook up with their aunt Jillian. Jillian is the perfect relative for this sort of situation; she is a real estate agent and that means she has accommodations on tap. Of course, the accommodations look like something from Texas Chainsaw Massacre, with a dock. And Jillian is charging them $650 rent. But it’s just for a little while until the kids get their feet under them.

Chris is a pro surfer, now banned from the sport. He hopes to get some sort of job in the field, even though he can’t enter competitions. But first, they have to make the place a little more livable.

After a hard day of cleaning and buying supplies with their dwindling supply of cash, they have a choice; go to the party some stranger invited Nicole to, or spend an evening watching the Goonies with Aunt Jillian.

So, they are at this party, and hey, the house looks familiar! And Nicole is the object of the tribe’s attention, and Chris is distracted by a smokin’ hot honey who wants to shower with him. But there is a ruckus, and the siblings end up leaving before anyone gets any real action; Nicole really just got to flirt a little, and drink some from a hip flask. Hmmm?

It’s a rough night on Nicole. Apparently what was in that flask did not agree with her. The next day, Chris is off in search of gainful employment. The best lead he gets is as an assistant to a surfboard shaper named Edgar Frog.

Edgar’s place is a little…unusual, a shop and trailer with many visible crosses and wreathes of garlic, and a circle of salt all the way around. They leave a note. Work is work.

Things do not go well. Shane, leader of the surfers, seems to think he has some sort of proprietary rights to Nicole. Worse, Nicole seems strangely infatuated with him. Then, the fangs come out, and the Emmerson siblings realize they are definitely not in Kansas anymore.

And that is when Edgar Frog comes to the rescue. Is he insane? Surfboard shaper and vampire hunter? Well, yes. But he is also good at what he does.

Here is the question though, can two kids and one nutty vampire hunter stave off the effects of the entire tribe? And what about Nicole? What was that she drank? Can she be saved?

Well, 21 years later, here is the sequel. Was it worth the wait?

As a sequel, it leaves a good bit to be desired. The first movie had a magically quality that is lacking here. But as a movie, it is not bad. Not great, mind you, but not bad at all.

There is a definite air of homage to the first movie. When Nicole hangs the deer antlers on the wall, you know that they will eventually have a vampire hanging off them. Nor are we disappointed. The siblings are the Emmersons, and one has to wonder are these the kids of Michael and Star?

One of the greatest bits though, is the reappearance of Timmy Cappello. Remember the smokin’ hot sweaty sex gawd that sang at the beach concert and played the sax? He makes a cameo in this movie. I’ll give you a clue; he is wearing the exact same outfit.

And I think he nicely demonstrates why vampirism has an appeal; to never grow old; never suffer the ravages of time, or pay the wages of excess? How can that not be tempting?

One great homage however is the leader of the Tribe, Shane. Shane is played by Angus Sutherland. Sound familiar? His older half brother, Keifer, played David, leader of the Lost Boys. Angus is a little less gorgeous, but equally sexy, as his brother.
And of course, Edgar Frog is back. And there is no doubt it is Edgar. Feldman hit the same groove he had way back when. Edgar didn’t grow up, he just grew older and more cynical. Feldman is great in this role. It makes the movie.

There are other returning faces; his brother Allen, and Sam Emmerson. Sam is in an Easter egg. Watch the credits. Let them roll. You won’t be sorry.

And what does this mean? It screams to me, set up for a sequel. But then again, so did the fact that David’s body did not explode at the end of the first movie, and indeed that was to set up Lost Girls, a sequel that never materialized.

If they can keep the value up, or better yet, raise it, that might be a movie worth seeing. It is great to see the Coreys working again, and not just airing their dirty laundry. When one looks back at the sweet faced little gay kid with a poster of Rob Lowe on his wall, and then looks what fame and drugs have done to him, one can understand the appeal of the undead; to never have to wear the marks of your sins upon your face…yes that is tempting.

So if you loved the first movie, or if you just love a good B grade Vampire Flick, then this movie is a great way to kill an evening. I guess it appeals to the boy inside all of us who refuses to grow up.
