Plot Details: This opinion reveals minor details about the movie's plot.
I loved the original teen vampire movie, The Lost Boys, so naturally I was very interested in this sequel called The Lost Boys: The Tribe. When I first saw the trailer for it a few months ago, I thought this movie was going to get a theatrical release, but instead it went direct to video and just recently came available. I rented it on Blu-Ray from Netflix.
The only actor from the first movie to be in this one is Corey Feldman, and he resumes his role as one of the Frog brothers who now shapes surfboards and hunts vampires. While Keifer Sutherland played the lead vampire in the first, believe it or not his little brother (Angus Sutherland) plays the main vamp in this movie. He looks a little like Keifer, but he is only a half-brother as they do not share the same mother. Other than that, I did not recognize anyone else from the cast.
In this story, which is set in present day, two teenage kids (Tad Hilgenbrink and Autumn Reeser) move to California to live with their greedy aunt after their parents died. Hilgenbrinks character is a former surfing champ and a few people around town recognize him. As you might suspect, all the vampires in this movie are big time surfers and they recognize him. The lead vampire takes a liking to Reesers character, and pretty soon Hilgenbrink finds himself trying to fight off a pack of surf vampires from stealing his sister and making her one of them. To help do this, he recruits the help of Corey Feldman.
In a nutshell, you might like this movie if you liked the first one. Its nowhere near as good, but thats practically a given. Even though the first movie was a teen comedy with a love story and all that, it wasnt as dumb as many of todays teen movies are. Not to say this one is dumb, but it lacks the coolness factor that made the first one work so well. Theres not a single good one-liner to compare with Corey Haims classic death by stereo line. On top of that, the whole surfing thing seems so last decade. Corey Feldman is good as Frog, though I still cant decide if he was trying to be funny by overacting, or if he was just overacting. Youll have to see for yourself.
Other than Feldman, I didnt see where anyone from the first movie had much to do this one. The screenwriter, Hans Rodionoff, has only written a few low-budget horror movies. The director, P.J. Pesce, did a couple of episodes of The Profiler as well as the third From Dusk Til Dawn movie. I actually preferred that I didnt recognize any of the other cast members, since horror movies work better that way.
This movie earns its R rating pretty well because of all the language, gore, and occasional nudity. Theres enough profanity in the first minute to secure the R rating, actually. As for the gore, theres not a real high body count, but some of it is used for comic effect like when the vampires do really brutal things to each other (disembowelment, for one) because they know itll just heal back.
There is a little surprise cameo after the end credits that features another actor from the first movie, and it implies that there may be a sequel. There is a good bit of buzz around this movie since the original The Lost Boys was such a cult hit, and I expect most people who liked the first movie will find something to like about this one. If video sales are up, there probably will be a sequel. Id watch it.
