Bon Jovi venture into new musical territory and have inevitably taken the Lost Highway to mainstream country pop rock land. OK, not so fast, that might not be entirely accurate or fair to Bon Jovi, but the reality of it is that they do the crossover thing with class. Some of it actually works out wonderfully such as Summertime, Make a Memory, We Got it Going On and One Step Closer, while some of it is not so brilliant such as the lost causes and melancholic mood of both Whole Lot of Leaving (acoustic verses with big loud rock flavored choruses) and less we forget The Last Night. Theres no denying the band has gone all pop and country rock, sometimes I was reminded of the Eagles of yesteryear and then sometimes of the new Bryan Adams of today.
I think this was to be expected after the band put out This Left Feels Right, an all-acoustic album of the bands biggest hits. They followed that up with Have A Nice Day which included one of the bands biggest crossover country hit when "Who Says You Can't Go Home" went to #1 on Billboards Hot Country Songs in 2006. On another note, Lost Highway is not as driving a tune as prior title tracks Have a Nice Day and Bounce. Just wanted to point that out.
Although the slow building Make a Memory does take quite some time to build up to the chorus with some very decent orchestrations, the track is beautiful in its simplicity and works as the albums very soothing atmospheric ballad. Think Bed of Roses as the old memory...
The liner notes should come with a recommendation to listen to We Got it Going On with volume LOUD! It will rock you silly, positive to get everybody bobbing their heads, jumping up and down and shaking their booties, sure to be a party favorite, fun-Fun-FUN! Yes, Big & Rich make a guest appearance and yes; Richie Sambora makes very good use of his familiar talkbox guitar as he performs a most inspired solo here. Probably rank amongst Bon Jovis best rocking out tune in years...for me anyway. Don't forget to play it LOUD! :)
Youll find some subtle country flavored tracks such as the bouncy Lost Highway and the wonderful I Love This Town, and then some softer ones such as the wishful thinking themed songs of Seat Next to You and Stranger, the latter song performed as a duet with country star LeAnn Rimes. Damn, theres even one track that is One Step Closer to the new country vibes of today...talk about taking chances! These tracks will appeal to both country music and pop fans everywhere. Purely pop rock flavored tracks: Any Other Day, Everybodys Broken and the Last Night will no doubt appeal to the mainstream rock masses.
Bon Jovi continues on their musical journey they started with This Left Feels Right and which was reinforced on Have a Nice Day. Considering the crossover hit they had on their prior release, Im not surprised to see the boys venturing into popular easygoing musical territory. I mean, some of these songs sound great in my car, even better on my stereo. Im totally impressed! Forget about the country inkling or that it's Bon Jovi and just enjoy the ride. :)
