Lotrimin AF - Give Athlete's Foot the Boot

Written: Mar 21 '01 (Updated Mar 27 '01)
Pros:Easy to apply, Effective
Cons:Relief is not immediate
The Bottom Line: Lotrimin AF applies easily and effectively combats the discomfort of athlete's foot.

I’ve been itching for some time to write an epinion about Lotrimin AF , a remedy for tinea pedis, otherwise known as athlete’s foot or the agony of de feet. It is an infection on the foot’s skin caused by the fungus tinea. This infectious fungus thrives on damp surfaces making the moist skin between the toes a perfect place for it to set up a homestead. Tinea pedis may cause relentlessly itchy, red skin and in some cases can spread to the toenails – tinea unguium. It’s not difficult to self diagnose a case of athlete’s foot. The persistent, irritating itch, the red, inflamed area, dead skin between the toes, small blisters (sometimes), and damp, musty foot odor are the obvious signs and symptoms. Foot odor is not always evident unless you have assistance. If our dog won’t sleep at the foot of the bed and runs off with a whimper or yelp when I remove my socks, a little investigation is in order.

Athlete’s foot can be treated with over the counter medications such as antifungal powders, creams or ointments. For severe cases your doctor can prescribe oral or more powerful antifungal medications. In addition the area should be kept fastidiously dry and clean to obtain quicker relief and the demise of the unwelcome fungi guest. Ventilation of the area is recommended by changing shoes and socks more often, and exposing your feet to air as much as possible in the privacy of your own home. I have used a variety of products for this recurring nuisance including Lotrimin AF Deodorant Powder.

Lotrimin AF comes in a 3.5 ounce aerosol can and claims to relieve” itching, cracking, burning and scaling.” Its active ingredient is miconazole nitrate in a 2 % concentration. Also in the formula are isobutene, alcohol, talc, stearalkonium hectorite, and fragrance.
It is made and distributed by Schering Plough. After the athlete’s foot sufferer washes and dries the afflicted area, he/she is directed to spray the affected skin with a thin layer of the product twice a day (morning and night). If the condition persists after four weeks of treatment, it is advised to discontinue the Lotramin and visit a doctor.

The Lotrimin feels cool when sprayed on the skin between and around the toes. Its fragrance is not objectionable but certainly not memorable either. Nobody will ever compliment you on how great your feet smell or ask you if you’re wearing a new cologne or perfume. I think it has a powdery alcohol bouquet. Relief is not immediate.
When I use this product the itching continues for another hour or so, but eventually subsides and with conscientious use is usually gone and stays gone within a few hours or by the next day.

Interestingly enough the following is printed on the exterior of the product’s can. ( I hate when they print things on the interior!)
“Proven clinically effective in the treatment of athelete’s foot (tinea pedis), jock itch (tinea cruris), and ringworm (tinea corporis). All of these conditions are caused by the tinea fungus ,and all can be treated with the Lotrimin Deodorant Powder which prominently touts on the can “ Cures Athlete’s Foot”. I’ve noticed that there is another Lotrimin antifungal spray made for jock itch. In some stores its price is higher than that of the athlete’s foot formula. I thought that was odd so I compared the ingredients of both products and found that both have the same concentration of miconazole nitrate making me conclude that it’s not necessary to pay extra for the jock itch product. If a person has both conditions, one can of Lotramin AF will treat both.

I like the Lotrimin AF Deodorant Powder antifungal spray and will continue to buy it. If used according to directions it works effectively to relieve the discomfort of athlete’s foot and jock itch. Personally I find it a preferable alternative to the creams and ointments available or using scratch paper.
