| oceanwave's Full Review: IBM Domino Application Server 5 Full Version for P... |
I have used Notes for 4 years, used Exchanged for 2 years, in the past time, always have some people ask me to compare the Microsoft and the Lotus Notes, I can only told them, they are quit different product, you can not put them together to compare.
In my opinion, the Exchange system is only a mail system, it can only act as mail system, can only run on Microsoft Windows NT system, and in Exchange, the development are so difficult,Microsoft have three development for it, Exchange Forms Designer, Outlook Forms Designer and VB related tools, use them to develop, you must be familiar with the MAPI, windows Aps and NT, you can not use them to develop a good web application, have you ever seen a Exchange Web application can be used by outlook? And the Exchange's index function are so poor.
And the Lotus notes are quit different, especially the Domino R5, It can run on many different Platform, S390,AS400, Unix, Linux, and windows NT, windows 2000...In Notes, you can use LotusScript, Javascript,Java, ActiveX... to develop, you can develop a good Web site easily, even you don't know the Http language.
Of course, you still can complete those functions by Microsoft product, but you need almost the all Back Office family products, not only the Exchange, create a Web Server by IIS, Mail system by Exchange, Security by Key Management Server and Certificate Server, browser use IE, Send /Receive mail by Outlook ... And with Domino R5 ,you can own all the functions, with the newest Lotus products "inotes",you can also use Web method to access your mail, use Outlook as client to receive/send email,it's really powerful.
What make me feel more strange is that a lot of company use the Exchange as their system, and use Domino as their application Server, just like our company, did they know that the Domino's mail system are more power than Exchange ?
I always admire the Microsoft, for they can always intergrade other products' advantages, but about the Exchange system,I thought it still have a lot of things to learn, hope Exchange 2000 will have a new look.
