Urban gets Rockin'

Written: Nov 11 '06
Pros:Very Listenable; rock/pop tones
Cons:rock/pop tones less blue grass sounding country
The Bottom Line: Another good effort from Keith Urban. Fans will enjoy this album.

In spite of his nationalized drinking problem, Keith Urban has turned out a nicely done album. There is no song that I hate or have even skipped after listening to the album constantly since its release on Tuesday. While its on step away from the country sound that we are used to from Urban, its one step toward the rock and roll we always suspected lie dormant within him. Its a decent length at 67 minutes when you include the bonus track that I received on iTunes. It consists of 14 tracks that include his usual love song/ballad, a deep meaningful song with some insight about life, and then some fun rocking tracks.

Here is a breakdown of the tracks:

1. Once in Lifetime--co-written by Urban. This is the single off the album. It's the upbeat love song. We have found love and now we are going to make it to happily ever after. Features piano, guitar, banjo, percussion. It sounds more pop than country (even with the banjo). Nice song. Not as catchy as his other love song hits.

2. Shine--co-written by Keith Urban. This song reminds me of Savage Garden's Crash and Burn in message not arrangement. It's the when you are having a hard time, I will be there for you song. Nice easy sound, pop ballad sound. Features piano, guitar electric and acoustic, percussion, and the banjo is back (proving it doesn't have to be blue grass to utilize the banjo).

Chorus: When the sun is hard to find/ When it’s rainin’ in your eyes/ When the shadows block those pretty little blue skies livin’ inside you/ When the fallin’ of your tears/ Makes the candle disappear/ When you just can’t see the light/ Baby, I’ll find a way to shine/ I’ll find a way to shine

3. I Told You So--Written by Keith Urban. This is one of my favorites of the album--Has a nice driving beat that drew me right in. Features a nice fiddle line and a nice banjo line, I also really like the electric guitar accents in this one too. I also like the lyrics. One person in the relationship has left and the other is willing to take them back.

Chorus:Oh, can’t you see/ That for worse, or for better, we’re better together / Please just come back home/ No, don’t say that you’re sorry/ And I won’t say I told you so

4. I Can't Stop Loving You--Billy Nicholls. This is a cover of a song originally done by Leo Slayer and then by Phil Collins. I am not really familiar with any version of this song, but I think Urban does a night job with it.

5. Won't Let You Down--Keith Urban. This is another "catch you when you fall song" like Shine. Music has a bit of a darker, sadder tone than Shine. Lots of piano, Guitar, and percussion.

6. Faster Car--Keith Urban. Sounds like a weird 70's rock and roll song to me. Sort of a bouncy sounding song. Had the record sound, likes its a record playing instead digital at the beginning. Sort of a fun song.

7. Stupid Boy--Sarah Buxton, Deanna Bryant & Dave Berg. This is very deep song and touching. Keith Urban puts lots of emotion into this song. Its a slow ballad. Guitar and percussion. I really like this one as well.

Chorus: She laid her heart and soul right in your hands/ And you stole her every dream and you crushed her plans/ She never even knew she had a choice/ And that’s what happens when the only voice/ She hears is telling her she can’t/ Stupid boy

8. Used to the Pain--Darrell Brown & Keith Urban. This is I have know what you have been through song. One that assures us that everyone goes through their own pain and at some point it will end and life will get easier. Sort of an upbeat song with a message of hope. Guitar and percussion.

9. God Made Woman-- Hillary Lindsey, Gordie Sampson & Steve McEwan. This is another kind of fun song to me. Its about a man who is astounded by his woman and is musing on how God must of felt when he created her. Has an interesting choir bit at the front. Nice electric guitar and percussion line. a bit of a rock ballad.

Lyrics. . .He took a river that winds and turns / Took a fire that breathes and burns / And put it all in place / In the most perfect way. . .

10. Tu Compania (Your Company)-- Monty Powell & Keith Urban. Good old fashion toe tapping country song with a hand clapping beat, Ch-ka-ka percussion vocals, and Banjo. The only thing is towards the end they overlay some Spanish vocals that don't seem to fit the song very well. I love the song except for that.

11. Everybody--Richard Marx & Keith Urban. Its basically a nice ballad about how everybody needs somebody sometimes.

12. Got it Right This Time--Keith Urban. Its got a nice organ piece at the beginning. Another pop sounding song. About knowing you have found the right person to love.

13. Slow Turning--John Hiatt. Another good cover. I am not familiar with this song either. Its the bonus track for ordering the album through iTunes.

14. Raise the Barn (features Ronnie Dunn)--Monty Powell & Keith Urban. Written for the victims of Katrina. Its about neighbors banding together to "Raise the Barn" rebuild and carry on. Another one of my favorites of the album. Has a more country sound than some of the other songs.

Overall this is another good album by Keith Urban, those who preferred his blue grass sound from albums like The Ranch may be disappointed by the rock/pop sound of most of the songs on this album. But all other Keith Urban fans will find something to love on this album. I have certainly enjoyed listening to it for the past week.
