Someone once asked me a very interesting question
if you could lose your virginity again, who would you pick for the deed? I mean, after all, to most people this is a pretty big deal and you want it to be with someone that you are into, knows what he or she is doing and twenty years after the fact
when you close your eyes and think of that memorable event, your toe curls, you get a tingle down your spine and a grin across your face thats a dead giveaway that you are thinking of something naughty. In regards to my venture into sexuality, I had some new wave German romantic poet wanna be seduce me
but if I had it to do all over again, Peter Steele would be at the top of the list. No, I take that back, he would be the list. While some may consider his vocal style somewhat predictable, if you havent listened to all of Type O Negatives music you are making an assumption and you know what they say when you assume things right? In this respect, you are missing out on some of the deepest, darkest and hauntingly romantic music ever
but hey, dont take my word for it. Listen to some songs, read the lyrics and hear Peter say the words
Ill do anything
to make you cum [Be My Druidess, October Rust] and tell me that your thighs dont go up in flames. Well, for the girlies that is.
I will never be able to settling on a favorite song from the group; their musical variety makes it an almost impossible task to pick just one but if someone stepped up to me, pressed a gun to my temple and forced me to pick, Love You To Death would more than likely be the one that came to mind first. So what makes this song stand out from the rest? Well, its one of their longer tracks and has so much variety that it never gets old. Personally, this is a song that I can listen to over and over again and still get the same enchanted feeling from both the music and lyrics the uneven tempo of the song, plethora of instruments used and of course the stunning and enthralling vocals are just a few of the kudos I have to say about this song. When compared to the rest of the music off of October Rust, it fits in well with the underlying references to nature and blatant erotica but it definitely has its own unique ranking when compared to the complete discography. Running for almost seven minutes, the studio version [full length version] is an emotional ride that lifts you up, drags you down and never fails to excite the senses. Sheesh, the way Im going on about this youd think its the greatest thing since the internet
in some ways its better
The Tracks
Love You To Death [edited version]
Summer Breeze
Love You To Death [full length]
The intent of the song, from my point of view, is to show the many layers and levels of love or at least Type O Negatives definition of it. To quote Henry Rollins If youre gonna love someone then love them with all your heart, if youre gonna hate someone, hate them with all your heart. In a lot of ways that type of intensity is reflected in not just the music but the lyrics of Love You To Death. Being able to give your heart and soul to someone without the fear that theyll rip it to shreds and wipe their muddy feet on it thats what my definition of love is its not about greeting cards, roses or dates its that feeling that you get, that nervous restlessness when you know that special someone is due home in ten minutes. Thats the best way I can sum up the immense and overpowering aura of the song that electric charge you feel when you make that connection with that someone special. The person that youd be willing to die for, the person that is your equal on so many levels that you are left numb, scared and elated all that the same time. The first time I heard this song I was captivated by the background vocals, rise and fall feel of the music and as time went on, the more I listened to it
the more I picked up on these small little intrinsic things like the overtracking of the bass after the second chorus, the different instruments used to shape and mold the song and the true beauty, sorrow and admiration thats reflected through the blending of lyrics and vocal presentation.
Both versions serve to take the listener on an erotic roller coaster ride via the stunning and hypnotic keyboards and piano introduction, languid tempo that simmers, boils then backs off to attack again later in the song
combine that with fat bass chords that appear from time to time and some of Kennys most impressive and expressive guitar work. It goes without saying that Peters lead vocals are gripping and erotic, but on this song you really get to hear him not that bellowing and slightly satanic sound but a glimpse at some of his most emotional and intense vocals but Id be morose if I didnt also mention the backing vocals that help to widen the sphere of the song, lifting it up in just the right spots and giving it some body in areas that would otherwise feel a little empty. You arent really losing much when you listen to the edited version of the song, the only elements that are removed are the long breaks between the verses but this song is so awesome that if it were 30 minutes long, Id still hit the repeat button over and over again. The edited version is about two minutes less than the full version and was, more than likely, included for those who dont get into the long and drawn out tracks that Type O are well known for.
In her place one hundred candles burning
as salty sweat drips from her breast
her hips move and I can feel what they're saying, swaying
They say the beast inside of me is gonna get ya, get ya
Something that really puzzled me about this single is the fact that it has songs from two different releases - Love You To Death from October Rust and Summer Breeze from Bloody Kisses. This isnt something that usually happens with CD singles but in this case I am not complaining in the least, both songs show varying sides of the groups core root and variance of style. Petes vocals on Summer Breeze are deep, dark and driving through the whole song his voice is recessed but at the same time contain a lot of emotion. Originally recorded by Seals & Croft in 1972, this cover version is something that you simply have to hear to appreciate. That, in itself, is something that can easily be said about all of the Type O Negative cover songs; Cinnamon Girl being a great example. What really makes Summer Breeze sizzle is the guitar work, the intro piece sets the tone for the rest of the track but if that were the only redeeming quality, it just simply wouldnt be a Type O song. As the song progresses the pace is slow, almost mellow, but its sort of like a volcano that bubbling
eventually that magma is gonna bust through and explode. That aural climax happens about three quarters of the way through the song when you can hear all the elements of the group come together but that really does nothing to prepare you for the second wave when Summer Breeze meets Summer Girl. Of course, thats something that you can only experience when you listen to the parent CD [Bloody Kisses]
if youve already had that experience you might be a little let down hearing just one facet of the presentation.
See the smile waiting in the kitchen
Foods cooking and the plates for two
Feel the arms that reach out to hold me
In the evening when the day is through
The Bottom Line
Unless you are a hard-core fan of the group or have some deep attachment to this song, chances are you can get away with the version that appears on October Rust. For me this was a must have single that took me about three years to track down, purchase and receive and let me just say, it was definitely well worth the wait and effort. There arent a lot of perks to this single outside of the cover art and minimal amount of inside information; this comes in the Digipak format so theres no clunky plastic jewel case to deal with but if you plan on listening to it a lot, the pressed cardboard sleeve will start to show some signs of wear. Die hard fans of the group will no doubt have this on their wish list if they dont already have it in their collection, surprisingly you can usually find this at sites like eBay or Amazon.com but you are going to have to settle for used copies rather than new, sealed ones. This also means you stand to get ripped off instead of an original CD, you could end up with a burned copy. Do yourself a favor and go through a reputable CD broker that deals with rare and imported discs rather than trying to save a few bucks and taking the risk of getting ripped off.
As always
