craig189's Full Review: Lowrance iWAY 350C Car GPS Receiver
I bought the Lowrance iWAY 350C GPS Receiver to use on a trip to Florida with my wife. Not only did I want to have a GPS to guide us around, I also wanted to evaluate it for possible long term use. As I am a gadget freak, I was excited about trying out something new.
SIZE
The screen of the unit is 3.5". The entire unit is approximately 4.5" x 4" x 2". It comes with a handy display arm with a suction cup at the end. You click the unit into the arm, then attach it to your windshield (on the inside, of course). the arm is adjustable, so the Lowrance iWAY 350C GPS Receiver can be used in any vehicle.
ACCESSORIES
Along with the adjustable display arm, the Lowrance iWAY 350C GPS Receiver comes with a soft cover, a power adapter that plugs into the cigarette lighter, and a USB cable to connect it to your computer. The computer cable is used if you want to upload MP3s or pictures to the unit.
SET UP
The Lowrance iWAY 350C GPS Receiver is very easy to set up, and the instructions are very accurate and easy to read. All you have to do is go outside and turn the unit on. The unit found a signal very fast and it only took about 10 minutes to set it up. As soon as the unit finds a signal, it locates your position and generates a map of the area. This was the case when we were at our house in New York.
When we went to Florida though, it began to act up. When we needed it the most, it failed. My wife typed the address of our hotel into it and it said that the address could not be found. Fair enough, as the hotel was fairly new and maybe the map was not updated. That was not the case. We found the hotel on our own, and when we turned onto the roadway that the unit could not find in its database, the unit recognized the street and displayed the name. This really ticked me off, as it seemed like just a simple software problem the manufacturer should have caught.
MORE PROBLEMS
The most annoying thing was the fact that it would power down, even with the power plugged in. It did this at the most inconvenient times also, such as when we were coming up to a turn. When we got to our destination, we would shut off the unit and put it in the glovebox. When we got back into the car and turned it on, it would take at least 5 minutes to acquire a signal, which was very annoying. The only way around this was to keep the power on, put it in the cupholder and hope no one stole it!
COST
The Lowrance iWAY 350C GPS Receiver retail price is $499, however I have seen it for $369 at the lowest. Crutchfield.com charges the $499, which is what I paid. Needless to say, it is getting returned.
Thankfully, I bought it from Crutchfield.com, who lets you try anything in their store out for 30 days and return it-- no questions asked (they even pay your return shipping). You can bet that I am going to send it back and try out another model.
