Is There Such a Thing As Being Too Loyal?

Written: Jan 01 '07 (Updated Jan 01 '07)
Pros:great characters and plot with twist and turns to make your day
Cons:no cons
The Bottom Line: You won't want to put the book down and when you're done, you'll certainly look forward to the next one.

I guess you could call me a loyal fan so reading LOYALTY IN DEATH only came natural.

Yes, the J.D. Robb In Death series has me totally hooked. I love a good murder mystery. Add romance, the ups and down of a newly married couple and the wise-crack comments of hard nosed but soft-hearted female cop and you have a series of books that you never want to put down.

Loyalty in Death is the ninth book in the series.

Before I begin about the book, let me reintroduce you to our leading characters.

Detective Eve Dallas / Eve is the hard nosed, no nonsense cop who dedicates her life to find those guilty of murdering others. Eve is also a newly married woman. Although she’s completely secure and confident in her job in the Homicide Department of the NYPSD (New York Police and Security Department), she’s extremely insecure in the role of wife. Add to that, that her husband is rich, only adds to her dilemma since she’s always been just eking out a living on her cop’s salary.

Roarke / For reasons concerning his shady past, he uses only this name. Because his life as a child then a young man was extremely difficult, he made his living the only way he knew how – and it wasn’t legal. However, the more money he made, the more legalized his dealing became. When he met Eve Dallas, his love for her caused him to make a drastic decision. Go behind her back and deal as usual or go straight. He went straight. Now a multi-billionaire, he no longer needs the shady characters and their illicit dealings.

Officer Delia Peabody / Eve’s aide. Much to Eve’s surprise, Peabody is also becoming a close friend. Eve never had friends before and the bond she shares with Peabody, while confusing, is becoming tighter and more enjoyable.

Detective Ian McNab / A young man who is a computer guru. (Wish he lived next door to me!) Whatever your computer needs, he can fix it, install it or remove it. There is very little, if anything, he can’t do with these machines.

Eve is called to investigate the death of a prominent business man whose murder seems like an open and shut case. Eve being the good cop she is, wanted to be sure and kept digging into the lives of the deceased, his family and his fiance who’d been the one to confess to the murder.

As Eve was working on her computer, she gets an email from a terrorist group that calls themselves Cassandra. The group tells her of a demonstration taking place at a certain address and insists she investigate. The address belongs to one of Roarke’s empty warehouses. Within seconds of Eve’s arrival, the building explodes into millions of pieces.

Even as Eve is blown to the ground, her mind begins to wonder why anyone would want to blow up an empty building. Roarke who shows up within seconds of the blast wonders the same thing. It appears that Cassandra notified him soon after notifying Eve.

Soon, Eve receives another note from Cassandra who demands the release of many world wide criminals or they will begin blowing up New York’s prominent buildings. Naturally, the police and the government refuse and the bombings begin.

While Eve is still a detective in the homicide department, she’s ordered to investigate the bombings since all the correspondence is sent directly to her.

Just when Eve thinks her life can’t get more complicated (investigating a murder and bombings and juggling a new marriage), Zeke, Peabody’s brother comes to visit and Eve learns that he’d been hired as a handyman by the murder victim’s fiance.

Peabody is worried sick that Zeke will be drawn into the murder investigation and Eve promises to do her best to close the case and not have Zeke implicated. She promises herself to find those responsible for the Cassandra bombings.

While Eve is busy with this heavy plate, Peabody is also keeping busy helping Eve and discovering her true feelings about Ian McNab.

While there are other important characters in the In Death series, these four are the main and more fun of the bunch.

While we all know that more times than not, the good guy, in this case, woman, always defeats the bad guys, J.D. Robb offers a great story, twisted plots and a lot of fun in the reading.

The relationship between Eve and Roarke is always a roller coaster ride. The talk, they fight they make up – and boy! - do they make up!

Peabody is a very charming and lovable person who could be the girl next door – yet, she is a professional when it comes to the job. She’s cute and perky and fun to read about.

Her understanding of Dallas’ quick witted, sharp tongue makes you understand the meaning of having a friend.

When it’s all said and done, this is a book that will make you begin to wish you were part Dallas and part Peabody with a bit of McNab and Roarke thrown in.

Yes, there is a whole lot to like about the In Death series, but one thing that goes on and on in every book that is to the credit of J.D. Robb is the cast of characters and she brings them all back and intertwines their lives.

J.D. Robb is a master at the game of writing and it’s seen in LOYALTY IN DEATH.

Enjoy the reading.

I did.
