Loyalty in Death is the ninth book in J.D. Robb's "In Death" series which revolves around Lieutenant Eve Dallas, a 2059 New York Police and Securities Detective that deals in homicide.
It has been very intriguing to watch this woman for over a year of her life. In the beginning books she was very much a loner that distrusted everyone. She only had one friend. And she never thought that anything in her life could be more important that standing for the dead she served.
However, we have watched her learn to trust others, learn to depend on others, and even more importantly, let others into her life.

Loyalty in Death - The Story
======================================
Loyalty is so named for the group of terrorists that are following in the footsteps of their predecessors decades before. Although the objectives were not met before, doesn't mean the children of that era shouldn't fight to make it right, or so they believe.
Early in the book Lieutenant Eve Dallas receives a notice that a demonstration of power was going to be held at one of her husbands abandoned buildings. When she arrives, the building blows up, she is left covered in ash trying to find answers to why anyone would blow up an empty building. Oh yeah, and why they would target one of her husband's, Roarke, buildings.
Cassandra has begun marking specific New York landmarks for destruction to prove their power, and they will continue until their demands are met, which include the release of numerous world renowned criminals.
While Eve is trying to solve the riddle of Cassandra, she also has a high-profile murder on her hands. Although it seems an open and shut case because the girlfriend stayed with the body, called the cops, and then confessed ... Eve just doesn't find it as tidy as it should be.
And to throw in just a little more of a sub-plot to make it all the more interesting, dear Officer Peabody's brother shows up in town. Normally this wouldn't mean much, but considering he was hired by the sister-in-law of the deceased, brought from New York all the way from Arizona, just to build some cabinets, it's gets even stranger.
What is truly amazing is the way that J.D. Robb is capable of giving so many details and ensuring there are numerous sub-plots to her stories, she still manages to tie them together and not leave you with cliff-hangers.

Loyalty in Death - The Characters
======================================
Lieutenant Eve Dallas - Did you know that Dallas is afraid of heights? It may have been mentioned a few times here and there throughout the books, but this time she is tested by that fear several times. Luckily for Roarke, she succeeds. I must say, I have great respect for a woman can think on her feet, under horrible conditions, and can remain calm until everything is taken care of.
Some people might find her cold, calculating, even heartless when she is able to do a job without flinching. But Eve's depth of emotion is so strong that you tend to want to cry when she can't, and feel the tremendous pressure lifted off your shoulders once she is finally able to let go.
Roarke - Ever since he met Dallas, it seems his life has gotten a little harder. As the target of several criminal activities, I think he is getting a little tired of the responsibilities he carries for the people and places under his control. But just as Dallas finds strength through him, he finds someone to care for him in her.
Detective Ian McNab & Officer Delia Peabody - Well! They sure got hot and bothered really fast! They are definitely a fun couple to watch, although for them it's just sex. Nothing more ... or is it?

Overall Recommendation
======================================
I'll admit it, I'm stuck, I'm hooked, I'm waiting anxiously for more new adventures to be released. If you enjoy historical romance, whether past or future, you'll the "In Death" series that J.D. Robb has given us.
With all the love, emotions, struggles, misunderstandings, and fights that come with historical romance, the "In Death" series comes through. However, for those that like to look to the future you have voice activated showers, flying cars, hover buses, tubes of pepsi & soy dogs ... it's all very fun to read about the little things that are brought to the story that could have easily been skipped over.
If you enjoy Jude Devereaux or Amanda Quick I think you'll like this series. I love it!
