I recently did a two-week eating circuit with my parents who were in town, and one evening we found ourselves at Lulu.
I had heard about the noise factor (yes, indeed it is deafening), heard about the reservations fiascos (we actually sat on time), but I don't think anyone has done justice to just how absolutely horrible, how stunningly disastrous, the service is. In fact, I would venture to say that Lulu has possibly the *worst* service I've ever encountered. Gentlemen, I salute you!
Our waiter was a boorish Frenchman who was comically rude. My father, who happens to collect wines, asked for a recommendation from the Monsieur. He pointed out a bottle to us, sneering that its a wine "we won't find in zhe grocery store." And that was just the beginning. We suffered through his bad food suggestions, his insistence that we were doing things "wrong" and that we *must* use our fingers on the appetizers (actually taking a fork out of my mother's hand) and his amazing disappearing act when we needed water, mustard, or general service (oh is that what the waiter is for!)
And the rest of the staff that usually helps a restaurant run efficiently? Perhaps they have been sucked into an internet start-up in SOMA and are now working as Marketing Managers, because they certainly weren't on the floor working this particular evening.
The food? Can't even remember. I was so stunned by the Monsieur and the overall complete breakdown in the service of this establishment that it was all we could do to get through the meal and run for the valet. Who, by the way, did a nice job getting us our car. Perhaps he should manage the restaurant as well?
