If you are looking for a quiet evening at a well-regarded San Francisco restaurant, you'll hate LuLu's. With a noise decibel rating that easily contends with a New York city sidewalk, LuLu's "ambience" is one of constant chatter, endless background noise and a cornucopia of chit-chat from its bar-stationed, wine-downing patrons.
So what are they all talking about?
Probably the food. :) The menu boasts what are praised as sumptuous seafood dishes and the food is elegantly prepared, and, admittedly, quite good. Here's the quick takeaway on the critical points on LuLu's:
Crowd:
Very late 20-s yuppyish. LuLu's has a happening bar scene on Friday night as the wait for your table can tease the 1-hour mark if you don't have reservations (and the 20 minute mark even if you do.) Located in the heart of SOMA, LuLu's attracts plenty of Internet professionals. The musical ambience for the restaurant is supplied by the constant ringing of cell phones.
Food:
Very good. Excellent seafood dishes and entrees. The butter is served warm and the bread is served soft... just as it should be. :)
Price:
A nice dinner date for two will probably run you at least $60 (with wine and appetizers).
Guest Tip:
Don't take your parents or grandparents there unless you like repeating your sentences five times.
Overall, I'd recommend LuLu's to anyone looking for a happening place to have dinner with Friends on a Friday night. It's far from ideal for conversation, but the food and crowd give it the buzz it deserves.
