I have become a fan of Lumiscope Blood Pressure monitors, especially after I started having awesome results by using them on my hypertensive patients.
Lumiscope Blood pressure monitors are easy to handle and are very accurate. A new introduction by Lumiscope is Wrist watch type model 1091. Before going to the the benefits of this new model, it is important that we know what actually the Blood pressure is and why Home monitoring is essential.
Blood pressure is the product of the cardiac output(i.e.,the amount of blood pumped by the heart per minute)and the vasomotor resistance (i.e.,the peripheral resistance that the blood faces while passing through the blood vessels) Normal B.P has no definite value. It is given as a range. It varies with age.Blood pressure is represented as systolic/diastolic value.(the systole represents the pumping power of the heart and the diastole represents the peripheral resistance)Normal B.P is 120-140/70-90 [systolic/diastolic].
Systolic B.P is the pressure recorded when the heart is contracting. The lower limit of the range(120) is considered normal in the young and the upper limit(140) is considered normal in the elderly. Diastolic pressure is more important because it gives the peripheral resistance i.e; it is the pressure when our heart is relaxed.Even if a person has a normal systolic B.P if he has a higher diastolic B.P then he would be considered as hypertensive.
Even normal people can have ocassional rise in B.P. For example as in anxiety,fear,exercise e.t.c. This is because of an increase in the heart rate. These are the physiological causes of an increased B.P.
The commonest cause of increased B.P is Primary or Essential hypertension . This is Idiopathic [i.e;unknown cause]. There may be some genetic predisposition for this.
There is another class called Secondary Hypertension.
Deposition of cholesterol in the walls of blood vessels [called as Atherosclerosis], Diabetes, Kidney failure, Retention of salt by the body are some pathological causes of increased B.P. Pathology means disease. So, a disease secondarily causes an increase in the B.P here.
Irrespective of the class under which your Hypertension falls, it is very essential that the Blood-pressure be frequently monitored. Because untreated Hypertension can lead to Heart failure, Loss of vision and Stroke.
Self-monitoring of Blood-Pressure by using electronic monitors is strongly recommended because this helps you to contact a doctor the moment you sense a rise in your B.P. Also some patients have higher Blood-pressure recordings when measured by the doctor than they normally have. This particular phenomenon is called White-Coat hypertension. Self-monitoring can overcome this problem.
Lumiscope 1091 wrist monitor can be worn on your wrist like a watch. It is comfortable and is very easy to use. It displays the blood pressure and the Heart rate[pulse]. All you have to do is press a button and the device automatically inflates and deflates. Then it gives you the readings. But I suggest that you relax at least for five minutes before you take a reading. Do not take the reading after a walk or an excessive talk. This gives an erroneous measurement. So, remember for an accurate reading relax for five minutes before you use the device.
Another precaution is that a gap of at least 10 minutes should be given to the device between the recordings. The device being electronic may give errors if the suggested gap is not maintained.
Lumiscope 1091 wrist model is easy to carry as it can be worn on your wrist. It is especially useful for those patients who have an episodic increases in their blood-pressure. It also has 29 memories. It stores 29 recordings with time and date of the recording.
