| Quebecoise's Full Review: Luna Bars 1 Bar |
Ahhhh Luna Bars....my latest love affair. So great is my affinity for this sports nutrition bar that I am not letting the fact that one recently stuck to a temporary dental cap in my mouth (causing it to come out...and me to swallow it) get in the way of my newfound passion.
My affair with Luna bars comes after my disappointing relationship with Power Bars. That relationship began with great promise...but went nowhere. (See review). Within weeks of our first encounter I found myself giving a colleague an entire case that I purchased in our passionate first days together. I wasn't as hasty with Luna Bars, but in retrospect, I could have been.
First, the basics on Luna:
Each bar is 1.69 ounces, or 48 grams. This is roughly the size of a granola bar, and about as heavy.
Most bars have 180 calories and about 40 of those calories are from fat. Several flavors have only 30 fat calories. That's about 4.5 grams of fat, 3 of it saturated fat. This is considerably less fat than most other sports nutrition bars I've looked at, except for Power Bars...which I dislike intensely.
Luna bars are chock full of vitamins and minerals. The average bar has 25 percent RDA on vitamin A; 100 percent vitamin C; 35 percent calcium; 100 percent vitamin E; 100 percent folate; 35 percent zinc; 35 percent selenium; 35 percent chromium and more.
The bar also provides 10 grams of protein, much of it soy protein. (Soy has been proven to be a particularly important nutrient for all women--particularly menopausal women). (It's great for men too).
What else is worth noting about Luna's composition? Well, it's wheat free, dairy free and contains no high fructose corn syrup (which has been shown to be a particularly unhealthy sweetener, and one harder to access as immediate energy).
And now...why I love it:
In addition to being a great addition to a healthy diet (as a snack, a substitute meal, or an exercise pick-me-up), Luna bars taste good. Really.
Their texture reminds me a little of a childhood favorite: Rice Krispie squares. But they're a little firmer, and less chewy. Some, including the lemon and chocolate/pecan varieties are coated on one side with a fairly thick layer of hard "icing". The lemon is zesty and lacks oversweetness; the chocolate tastes like a genuine chocolate layer--without dairy.
Luna Bar flavors include: S'Mores, Chai Tea, Tropical Crisp, Toasted Nutz Over Cranbery, Lemon Zest, Orange Bliss, Key Lime Pie, Chocolate Pecan Pie, Sesame Raisin Crunch, and Tropical Crunch. Of these, I've tried Lemon Zest, Toasted Nutz over Cranberry, and Chocolate Pecan Pie. I've like all of them equally (though sweet tooths will yearn for the Chocolate Pecan Pie flavor).
Are there any downsides to Luna?
1) Well, to be honest, I wish they were a tiny bit bigger. An extra ounce or two would cement our relationship nicely.
2) I wish they were a little cheaper. At $1.29 a piece I can't really indulge the way I'd like to. I suspect I could get them cheaper in bulk at a discount store like Costco, but haven't yet had the opportunity.
