| SHeineman's Full Review: Luna Bars 1 Bar |
I am a picky eater. There are very few healthy products that I have tried and enjoyed. I feel like I desperately need to change my diet some for the health benefits and weight loss. I'd tried some samples of other nutrition bars like Powerbar and Balance Bars but did not care for the taste of them. I originally read about Luna bars and their relative, Clif bars. I would love to have a nutritious bar that I could eat on the run but not be hungry 1 hour later. Most snacks I was reaching for were way too fatty and high calorie for me.
I was only able to find them in one store in my area (since I wrote this, they've popped up almost everywhere). I bought one Luna bar and one Clif bar to give the a try. While I enjoyed my Clif bar, I liked the Luna bar much more. I liked the flavor of it plus the lighter texture. I immediately bought several more.
The texture of the Luna bar is light. It reminds me of a grown up version of a Rice Crispy Treat, but is less gooey and less sweet. They are sweet but not super sweet like Rice Krispy treats. They do taste almost as good as a candy bar to me.
The bars are an excellent size. Each is 1.69oz and is large enough to fill me up when the snacking urge arises. I will also eat one for breakfast when I don't get a chance to grab something else. I keep a stash in my desk drawer for this very reason. While not as filling as other breakfasts, these do fill me up and get me to noon without a terribly growly stomach.
Each bar has around 180 calories and under 5 grams of fat. It is fortified with vitamins and minerals that women need most. It has 35% of the daily recommended value of calcium. I'm not much of a milk drinker, so I try to get as much calcium as I can in other ways. It has 100% of some other vitamins, including C, E, K, Thiamin, Riboflavin, Niacin, B6, Folate, B12, Biotin, and several others.
As for the taste... Did I mention what a picky eater I am? The list of food "rules" I have is endless! But, I have really enjoyed all the flavors I have purchased. I have tried the Chocolate Pecan Pie, which has a layer of chocolate on the bottom (almost like a crust of a pie, but it's a creamy chocolate) and has a hint of cinnamon taste. I don't taste much pecan, but that's okay because I enjoy it anyway. Nutz over Chocolate was tasty too. It has a chocolate layer on the bottom as well as peanut butter taste. It's quite good, as was Smores (but it didn't taste like the real thing, darn!).
Can you believe though that it wasn't the chocolate flavors that this chocoholic liked most? It was two other flavors, Lemon Zest and Chai Tea. Lemon Zest is sweet but tart, a wonderful lemon flavor. And Chai Tea has the same spicyness as the drink. It is probably my favorite!
The fruitier, nuttier ones don't appeal to me, so I have not tried those.
I used to purchase Luna Bars at a local natural foods store, but recently, I have found them everywhere from Kroger to Walgreens to Target. The natural foods store has the overall cheapest price of around $1.29, but the other stores frequently have them on sale, marked down from $1.59 to $0.99. I like to stock up then! The natural foods store also tends to have the best selection
And as additional bonus to these bars, the Clif company shows their dedication to women by offering a percentage of the proceeds to support the Breast Cancer Fund. Way to go Clif!
