Luvs Overnight Leakguards: "Off with you - Glowing Purple Demon!"

Written: Aug 24 '02 (Updated Aug 24 '02)
Pros:Cheaper than Huggies Overnites
Cons:Barney, Plastic Sticky Tabs, Um... Glow in the dark?
The Bottom Line: If you must use an overnight diaper and are looking for a cost savings, try Luvs. Otherwise, not a necessary purchase.

Always one to try a new diaper out, I thought I would try Luvs Overnight Leakguards when given the chance to combine a manufacturer coupon with a weekly store special bringing a $12.50 package of diapers to under $9.00. Prior to trying Luvs, the only other overnight diaper that we had used were Huggies Overnites which can be quite expensive, at least $1 or $2 more than Luvs on average (depending on size of package and point of purchase).

Is an Overnight diaper a necessity?
Not for everyone, No. Not even for us, really. But on occasion my son can be referred to as what is known as a heavy wetter. I have changed the 5 pound diapers in the morning to back this up. So, if he's had a lot of fluids (especially after dinner), then using a super absorbant diaper at night is a good idea. If your child is filling diapers overnight, waking up soaked, or having diaper blowouts, you might consider trying one of these.

Luvs Overnight Leakguards Detail Info

Size and Cost
Like all disposable diapers they are available in a range of sizes based on weight. As the poundage goes up, the lower amount of diapers available in the package for about the same cost per Jumbo Package. Unlike other diaper brands, I have never seen a Mega package of these diapers - though this may be a regional thing.

My son is just about 30 pounds and can fit in either a size 4 or size 5 diaper in most brands. In Luvs Overnight Leakguards I purchased the Size 5 package. As far as fit goes, I'm glad I went with the size 5 as these run on the trim side of things. I can't imagine a larger toddler fitting in the size 5, and at this time they do not make a size 6.

Size 1 (8 - 14 Lbs), 68 Ct - Approx. $ 0.18 each
Size 2 (12 - 18 Lbs), 58 Ct -Approx. $ 0.21 each
Size 3 (16 - 28 Lbs), 38 Ct -Approx. $ 0.32 each
Size 4 (22 - 37 Lbs), 34 Ct -Approx. $ 0.36 each
Size 5 (27 Lbs +), 30 Ct - Approx. $ 0.41 each

As stated earlier, the retail price of Luvs Overnight Leakguards was significantly lower than the Huggies brand.

Features
The selling point of these diapers is the 12-hour Nitelock System™ . The diapers are designed to prevent leaks and blowouts for overnight usage - especially for heavy wetters. They look just like a regular disposable diaper, with the newer "clothlike" paper cover but they are designed for overnite. After using these for several weeks, I can say that they do work pretty well overnight as far as wetness goes. In fact, they work just as good as their pricier competitor, I'd say.

Sounds great, right?

Well, um.. I have a few problems with Luvs Overnight Leakguards.

First of all, did it have to be Barney? I've never been a fan of this purple dinosaur who happens to be Luvs icon. Oh, how I wish they would change to something else!

Secondly, these diapers rely on sticky tab closures. The wasteband is coated in a slick plastic and the tabs on each side stick onto that, unlike the popular velcro tabs that other brands use. They say that the sticky tabs are more difficult to undo than the velcro closure tabs, but I don't think it matters. My son has been on a stripping spree lately at nap and morning time and these diapers are no more difficult than any others to be removed.

And lastly, what is the point of glow in the dark diapers? Yes, you read that right -these diapers glow in the dark. The actual marketing term that Luvs uses is Barney™ Niteglow designs. Essentially, these are glow in the dark stars, moons and Barneys. Its enough to cause Barney-phobic parents to go running from cribsides nationwide, surely. (Ok, maybe not that bad - but its bad!). I just don't see the point of it. Your child is supposed to be sleeping and can't really see the diaper wasteband too well, anyhow. Who are the designs there to amuse? Not me, for sure.

Overall

Despite my lack of enthusiasm for the glowing Barney patterns, with a coupon savings, I will be likely to purchase Luvs Overnight Leakguards given my current options (that or Huggies). Neither Huggies nor Luvs are our preferred brand of diapers in this household - that goes to Pampers. But, being the coupon shopper that I am, we use change brands often. On a side note, I do wish Pampers would come out with both an overnight and a swim diaper as their competitors have. (Get with the program, Pampers!)

Performance wise, Luvs Overnight Leakguards do work well. That is, when my son manages to keep one on overnight as opposed to removing it and tossing it out of his crib.
