Pros:Champagne service, punctual, modern fleet, good food and wine.
Cons:Can be expensive if not flying over a weekend. - Fokker can be noisy
The Bottom Line: Try Luxair on your next trip to Luxembourg and you will not contemplate the discount airlines again.
As a luxembourg resident, I have flown Luxair numerous times, mostly to london, but also to berlin, frankfurt, munich, lanzarote, prague and other destinations.
I can honestly say they are a great airline. I often use them or connecting flights and have never missed a connection. For example, when I fly to asia, I often fly luxair to frankfurt or munich then onwards.
Luxair, offer great food. Food is normally traditional, with pork and ham with a small salad. On very short flights (Under 40 minutes) a sandwich is offered before take off and drinks are served. A chocolate is ussually offered after the meal, together with a Congac. Coffee is also served during the entire flight. The coffee on Luxembourg tastes very good.
Window Size: - Window size varies amoung airlines. Luxair is one of the few airlines to offer larger size windows. It makes a difference as more natural light is available in the cabin making one feel good.
Newspapers: A good selection of newspapers(English, French, German, Italian, Spanish..) is offered.
Beer: A good selection of luxembourgish (Mousel, Diekirch, Simon Pills) and International beers, are offered.
Luxair operate propeller fokker 50, Embraer Jets and Boeing 737. The new Embraer Eurojet is very comfortable. Feels almost like a leer jet. They used to have a 30 seater propeller, but this has been replaced by the larger 50 seat embraer jet. One Fokker 50 did have an accident recently in thick fog, but, I have travelled Fokker 50 since I was a kid, and believe them to be very safe planes.
Oh, I was once diverted to Saarbruken(Germany) due to thick fog in luxembourg and a bus was arranged to take passengers to Luxembourg. The airplane did make 3 attempts to land, before diverting. Still, better to divert than have an accident. Can't blame luxair for this.
Seat Embraer: The Seat varies between plane. In the Embraer, the seats are comfortable, with 2 seats on the left and one on the right. So, if you sit on the right, you are never more than 1 seat away from window or Isle.
Seat Boeing: offers 3 seats on each side. In business, the middle seat folds down to become a table and there is slightly more leg room.
Seat Fokker: 2 seats on either side of the row.
Luxembourg airport is small, and I have often checked in only 20 minutes before departure. While I don't reccomend doing this, its nice to know it can be done.
The duty free shop in luxembourg airport offers a good range of cigarettes, chocolates and perfume (If you are travelling out of the EU). There is also one restaurant and a newspaper store. If travelling within the Euro area, tax free has been abolished, but Luxembourg taxes are still lower than neighbouring countries, so consider picking up a few hundred cigarettes and some whiskey.
Given that Luxair flights are mostly short hops, no inflight movies or entertainment is offered. This is not missed on a one hour flight especially when food is served.
Luxair is now part of the star alliance (Lufthansa is a 30%shareholder of Luxair), and miles can be earned with Luxair on some routes. For example, 500 miles are offered for Frnkfurt, even though Frankfurt is less than 200 miles.
Luxair flight to London city airport is operated by VLM. The service on VLM is not as good as Luxair, but City Airport is very convenient. The flight is operated by Fokker 50.
