Pros:basically everything
Cons:colors don't layer well on top of each other, price
The Bottom Line: This is a great new MAC product, one that everyone should try.
First of all, I have to declare my love for my two new MAC Shadesticks. I own Shimmersand and Crimsonaire and adore both of them. They are both staples in
The product description, according to macosmetics.com:
A smooth and silky, rich and creamy eye shadow delivered in a sophisticated stick-style format. Provides rich gem-style colour overlaid by soft semi-precious finishes of shine. Glides on: works as a shadow - or a liner. Builds up coverage from sheer: colour always looks fabulous. More than an eye shadow. Total I-impact.
1.5 grams retails for $15.00. Shadesticks can be purchased anywhere MAC is sold (a store locator is available at macosmetics.com). This may be pricey for some, but these things will last for a very long time. Since it is a pencil, it only requires a little bit.
11 shades are currently available. The shades and descriptions (according to the MAC website) are:
Beige-ing: A sparkling beige toned champagne
Shimmersand: A tan-tinged peachy-beach
Taupographic: Map your eye tone mid-tone pinky-brown shimmer
Lucky Jade: Lightly charmed gilded green
Mangomix: A fruity rich coppered orange
Sea Me: Buoyantly mid-toned blue
Royal Hue: A devoted and loyal purple
Gentle Lentil: A pulsing black-brown
Sharkskin: Swimming sharp polished gray
Crimsonaire: Crimson with an uppity-pinkish air
Pink Couture: Specially made pink
Every color is absolutely beautiful. Seriously, really pretty. Most of the colors also go well with most skin tones.
The shadow comes in a stick form. Which means that it sort of a thick eyeliner pencil type thing. The actual shadow stick is about the size of the head of a thumbtack. When you want more, you twist the stick up. Simple, isnt it?
Application is even simpler. It literally takes less than a minute. Lightly drag the pencil across your eyelid, where you want the color to go and it goes on. It doesnt end up going all over the place, instead going on smoothly and without creasing.
Shadesticks make great bases for eyeshadows. I enjoy using my Shimmersand shadestick all over my eyes and using various other eyeshadows in the crease. I either use Shimmersand as an all over base or for a browbone highlight. Either way is gorgeous. I tend to use Crimsonaire in the crease and it really makes my eyes pop.
The one problem that I had with the application was the fact that Shimmersticks do not layer all that well on top of each other. They will blend wonderfully with other types of shadows, but I have found that on top of each other, the color being put on second, will not show up. This was my biggest annoyance at this product. Especially since I think that the colors I have would look extremely pretty together.
The product has phenomenal lasting power. It will stay on all day. No creasing or migrating. Two wonderful qualities for any eyeshadow product to have. Also, it will not fade too much as the day goes on.
The product will remove with a little makeup remover.
Basically, this stuff is great and I love it. It works well, there are pretty colors and its long lasting and versatile. The only drawback is that they dont layer well on top of each other, but they were well with everything else. These truly are makeup must haves. There arent many colors at this point, but hopefully more will be created soon. They are truly beautiful and will be wonderful things for any makeup collection.
I may sound like a MAC makeup artist attempting to make a sale, but at least try one of these. Chances are you wont regret it.
