Put a new baby item in front of me, especially from a brand that I already trust, and you've sold yourself a baby item. When it came time to find pacifiers for the baby, I went in search of something that looked different than his older brother's (I know, for shame... my two-year-old still has his binky at night), and came upon the new MAM Soft Rim Pacifier.
~&~ The Basics ~&~
If you aren't familiar with the line of MAM pacifiers, they are made by Sassy Baby Toys. Somewhat unique in their design, MAM pacifiers feature an orthodontic nipple that can be place in baby's mouth either way (no more upside-down pacifiers!), and air vents in the pacifier base to help prevent the dreaded "binky mouth" where babies often get red marks from their pacifiers around their mouths.
The MAM Soft Rim Pacifier is the latest addition to the MAM pacifier line, and has a unique look to it. Rather than the larger butterfly or double-circle base, the MAM Soft Rim Pacifier has an hourglass shape, reducing the amount of pacifier that has contact with baby's face.
MAM Soft Rim Pacifiers have the usual round MAM inner circle (which means that only a MAM Pacifier Keeper will work with these), but unlike many of the other MAM pacifiers, these centers have no design printed on them. The base itself is made of clear plastic, with five vent holes (one large and four small) on each side of the hourglass. At the very edges of the pacifier base are two soft "ribs" that remind me of the material on the handles of Oxo kitchen tools. The pacifier nipple has a round bulb end to it, which helps keep it in baby's mouth, and the base has small bumps on the inside of the base around the nipple to help air flow even more and prevent the pacifier from "sticking" to baby's face.
The MAM Soft Rim Pacifiers are sold in packs of two in various colors, both all-one-color design (we have blue, mint green, yellow, and red) and mix and match colors, like the picture shown here at Epinions.
~&~ Parents Perspective ~&~
All three of my children have loved MAM pacifiers to the exclusion of other pacifiers. I was always trying out new ones on the market, but my children never liked them. I liked the idea that this new design would have even less contact with my baby's face, and show off even more of his cute smile (as much as I don't mind my kids having pacifiers, I hate how much of their faces are invisible to you because they are covered by a pacifier!).
The new design seems very streamlined, and less obtrusive than some of the other MAM pacifiers (I've never been a huge fan of the pictures on the pacifiers). The concept as a whole seems to work well, and I do see less evidence of my baby having just been sucking on a pacifier when I remove it from his mouth than I remember with my other children.
My biggest concern is how well these pacifiers will wear. I have a latex allergy, so we always choose the silicone nipples (MAM makes their pacifiers in both latex and silicone options so you have your choice), and we've always had tremendous wear value with MAM pacifiers. However, as I took one of these to review and checked the flexibility of the base, I noticed that due to the vents on each side, the base bends somewhat easily, and shows white stress marks along the area of the vents. Unlike our other MAM pacifiers, I'm going to have to make sure to replace these often so they don't break.
~&~ Baby Perspective ~&~
Well, in my humble opinion, a seven-month-old baby is a very discerning consumer. Not only does Bug seem to love these pacifiers, but offer him one MAM Soft Rim Pacifier and one MAM Crystal Pacifier and he'll choose the MAM Soft Rim Pacifier every time.
Obviously, to him, this product rates a five-star rating, but because of my concerns about stress wear on the pacifier base, we are going to have to settle with a four.
The Soft Rim MAM Pacifier, for babies 0-6 months, has a contoured shield that is gentle on baby's skin and has ample ventilation holes that help preve...More at BabyEarth
