I have been using pacifiers made by MAM for over ten years now and my third child is currently using them now.
SOME RANDOM THOUGHTS (AFTER 3 KIDS) ON PACIFIERS VS. THUMBS
I realize the thumb vs. pacifier is a big debate for some people, however, I love pacifiers. My oldest was still using a pacifier at three - she refused to give it up. I was glad we stayed away from thumb sucking because she could have misaligned her teeth if she sucked her thumb much past age 3. Instead, at three, we had a bye-bye binky party, ceremoniously threw them in the trash, and we were done with the sucky things. If she had a thumb, she would have been sucking it well into her school years.
On the other hand, if she had used her thumb rather than a pacifier, we wouldn't have to go into her room multiple times in the middle of the night every time she lost one. Still, the ability to get rid of a pacifier is what really won me over to the things. Considering how addictive two of my children found pacifiers, I am glad we will never have to pay the orthodonture bills for thumb sucking gone wrong.
THIS PRODUCT
These MAMs are pacifiers for children over 6 months old. Mam makes an infant version of this pacifier that has a smaller nipple and shield. My children seemed to use these larger ones earlier than the recommended 6 months old. Usually, by 4 months old, they had grown enough to graduate to the bigger version.
I was originally drawn to the MAMs because the nipple can be used either way. Some other brands, like NUK, have a tilted nipple. For some reason, this intimidated me as a new parent - I guess I wasn't sure which way was up. In any case, MAM's nipple is not tilted so that can't be a problem.
MAMs also come in very colorful combinations with cute cartoons on the plastic button on the outside of the binky. These cartoons are more for the parent's enjoyment rather than the child's enjoyment since the child can't see the picture when the pacifier is in their mouth. However, I have always thought they were cute.
Unlike some other pacifiers, MAMs don't come with a ring on the outside of the pacifier. The ring is helpful if you want to use a pacifier leash to attach the pacifier to the child's clothes. This leash is handy for infants and young toddlers who tend to drop their pacifiers frequently.
MAMs do have a leash that you can buy. The leash has a separate rubber ring that fits over the button on the outside of the pacifier. The leash is usually a pretty ribbon and there is a plastic clip at the end that fits on the baby's clothes. I don't really care for the MAM leashes. The plastic clip tends to break. If using a pacifier leash is important to you, consider using another brand of pacifier.
MAM nipples come in either silicone or rubber. It doesn't say on the packaging what you are getting so, if you have a preference, definitely look inside the packaging to see what you are getting. Rubber is brown - silicone is a milky color. I wash the pacifiers in the utensil portion of the dishwasher. Given this treatment, the rubber nipples tend to last, at most, a year before they become either gummy or cracked. Silicone lasts much longer. Some people prefer rubber because it is natural. I have never noticed that my kids prefer silicone to rubber and we have used and interchanged both.
MAMs come packaged in a plastic box that could, in theory, be used to store the pacifiers. We have never saved the boxes, I usually through them in a small tupperware in the diaper bag.
The shields of these pacifiers have a dimpled surface on the side that touches baby's face. This is so the skin can breath under the plastic. We have used these with three kids and the plastic shield has never caused a rash.
Another thing for new parents to know is that children become attached to their pacifiers. Once you pick a brand the child adapts to it, they are unlikely to want to change. So, consider that you may be making a long term commitment to any brand of pacifier you select.
FINAL RECOMMENDATION
I like these pacifiers. My youngest child is 2 and a half now so we are sure to leave this part of our life behind us soon. MAMs have worked well for us for three children so I can definitely highly recommend them.
