I had received the external version of this model for Christmas, and I loved it. It was easy to use, worked with either the USB 2.0 or the Firewire ports and I never had any trouble with any of the DVDs I burned. As a bonus it came with Nero 6, the easiest video and photo software package I have ever seen.
Well, the internal version did not disappoint. I wanted to reduce the number of drives I had connected to my computer. I have a Compaq and I had a DVD ROM, a CDRW and then the external Memorex DVD burner. I wanted to replace the CDRW with the internal DVD burner and get down to just two drives. I was having some lockups from time to time and I think it was because I had two writable drives. The only problem I had when I installed the unit was I forgot to move the jumper on the back. When I re-booted the computer just looked at me. Then I realized what I had done, cracked open the case again, moved the jumper and when I re-booted voila! Windows XP set up the drive upon boot up. The unit comes with Nero 7, which is a great bonus. Nero makes working with this drive a snap. I primarily use my DVD burner to archive photos and copy home movies. With Nero you just drag and drop. It is nice to put about 1500 photos on one disk. It keeps them off my hard drive.
I paid $69.99 at Office Depot for this unit. This is more than some other brands (the week I bought this they had an Ativa internal DVD burner for $38) but is worth it due to the addition of the Nero software package. Another juicy bonus is you get a blank DVD-R in the package so you can start burning something right away.
