| Lisa_J's Full Review: MGA Entertainment Bratz Dolls |
Long ago there was basically one primary doll brand that graced the birthday wish lists of young girls in the 4 8 year old range, Mattel Barbie. In fact I remember a time in which nearly every birthday list we viewed, listed Barbie. Well the lady in pink had to move over, making way for the trendy MGA Entertainment Bratz Dolls. These dolls gained popularity rapidly, and in fact this reviewer has long felt that it was the BRATZ gals that influenced the release of the Mattel My Scene dolls, and most recently the Mattel Flava line.
BRATZ, like Barbie dolls, are action figure dolls, approximately 10" 12" in height, but the similarities pretty much stop there. Two major differences are the face width and the shoe / foot configuration. Whereas Barbie has shoes that slip onto her eternally pointed foot, the BRATZ chicks have a peg leg that snaps into their combination foot & shoe configurations. In turn the BRATZ style of shoe stays on. Also, the exchange (of shoe) process is simple for the young child (4-8) to accomplish. Another fine trait with regard to the BRATZ foot is the fact that some of the dolls will stand (for a portion of time). The face of this doll line is much broader than that of the traditional Barbie, thus giving the manufacturer plenty of room for the make-up application. Speaking of make-up, it is important to mention that BRATZ have updated make-up, hairstyles, and clothing.
First marketed in June of 2001, the original MGA Entertainment Bratz Dolls received a certain level of opposition from some adults, who claimed that the make up and clothing styles offered a slut-like appearance. And then we have the long-standing critic of Barbie, whom makes claims that the doll is too thin and possibly inflicts the wrong image to children. To each his/her own, and I while I dont disrespect those whom don't like either doll line, but I do become frustrated when others attempt to impose their opinions onto my children. Honestly I don't think there will ever be a toy made that doesn't meet opposition of some sorts. I am not sure if MGA Entertainment acted via parental input, but I have noticed that later versions of the dolls tend to have a more subtle make-up application and the clothing articles appear to offer more coverage. Nonetheless it is important to me that I mention that my girls, currently 8 & 13, have played with various versions of Barbie and BRATZ, yet have never shown any evidence of being swayed in dress or make-up preference by any of them.

The BRATZ doll that is displayed for this category is the 2001 release of Sasha, one of the original Bratz Dolls. MGA Entertainment took on the role as licensor for BRATZ in 2002. Overtime Sasha and her counterparts Cloe, Jade, and Yasmin have experienced clothing and make-up changes and have been joined by other dolls: Meygan, Dana, Cameron, Dylan, Koby, and Eitan.
Sasha was one of the first BRATZ that landed in our home, via a birthday party gift to my oldest daughter (whom quite honestly wasn't very thrilled with the doll and gave it to her sister). My youngest daughter continues to enjoy playtime with Sasha and feels that the doll offers a hip-hop sort of attire. The doll has brown skin tone, green eyes, and long black hair. The tresses are thick, which has been a lot of fun to style. She has a heather-gray stocking cap, a long navy blue skirt with accents such as cargo pockets and a drawstring. The cotton top has stripes on the sleeves and the main portion is orange. The orange platform sneakers add a perfect touch to this ensemble. The original packaging also included a coordinating backpack, a pair of white pants, a halter style top and a pair of saddle like platform shoes.
I have been told that this particular doll wasn't as easy to locate as the other girlz and that in mint condition, in the box, is already considered a collector's item. Well we don't even have the box, the doll has been played with umpteen times, and our reason for 'collecting' BRATZ is for playtime purpose. That noted, let me mention that Sasha has been on numerous play dates, had her attire changed countless times, been lost behind the bed, yet she has continued to prove a durability element. YAY! Even more important than the durability is the fact that my (now 8-year-old) daughter has maintained interest in this doll, and in the others in the line.
Recommended
The longevity of interest makes this doll and other BRATZ worth the suggested retail and makes this mom more apt to agree to future MGA Entertainment Bratz Dolls purchases. I recommend Sasha and other dolls within the BRATZ line. Because of the tween appearance that this doll offers, and the attention to detail, I feel that these dolls are best suited for young girls 6 and up. For gift giving purposes, I recommend this doll for girls that are 7-9 years of age. The manufacturer recommends this doll for children 4 and up, with caution against children under 3 playing with it, due to pieces that can be a choking hazard.

Now as if the dolls weren't enough, I have seen school supplies, Halloween costumes, make-up, clothing, and party supplies bearing the BRATZ logo and such. This toy (thought to be a fad) appears to be here for the long haul!
