That's right, this lens will really reach out and grab some things that seem really far away.
When I bought this lens, I bought it mainly to shoot football games. It was amazing for this. I was actually able to pay for this lens by shooting high school football games for the local newspaper on Friday nights. It doesn't have the best aperture options for night time shooting, but if the lighting is any good at all, you will have no problem with this lens.
Now, I didn't make a lot of money shooting for the local newspaper, but that's one of the great things about this lens. I bought it for around $300. It is well worth that, especially if you are going to try and make a little money on the side.
The aperture is only 4.5 at 75mm and 5.6 at 300mm, but like I said before, you can still get pretty good shutter speeds if the lighting is any good at all.
Even though the aperture doesn't go quite as low as I would like, I don't thin I could have beaten the quality. This lens has been through it all...rain, hail, being dropped, etc. and it still works without a single problem. I have never had it worked on to this day and I have used it many, many times over the past 10 years.
This lens is a bargain at $300, and you can probably get it cheaper today than when I bought it. If you are looking for something that can really reach out and get that far away picture, but you don't want to spend $4000, this lens will do the trick.
