Just how close up do you want to get? If you're in the stands do you want a picture of your child on the football field? If you're in the same room, do you want a picture of just their nose? If you want a quality close-up picture then this just may be the addition for your camera!
With a normal 35mm-80mm zoom lens, you can usually get a really good picture of anyone in your backyard or room of your house. Small distances are really good for these types of lenses.
But what about when you are further away? My daughter is in marching band, and when sitting in the stadium seats the best I could do was to get a picture of the group she was in, not close-ups of her actually playing her instrument on the field.
With the Maxxum AF 70-210mm lens I can now get those close-ups of her alone.
Ease of Use
Switching lenses is extremely easy. Each of the Minolta lenses has a small red dot on them, and so does the camera. This makes it easy to know just which position the lense needs to be in to fit into the camera properly. Just line up the dots, insert the lens, and twist .. CLICK! It's done.
As for focusing, you have two options ... you can use either the Auto-focus feature or press one button to switch it to Manual. Which ever way you choose to go, it's just a matter of turning the barrel to zoom in or out on your subject. Once you get the picture where you want it, Auto-focus will sharpen the picture just by pressing half-way down on the shutter release button. Manually, just rotate the ring at the end of the lens until everything is in focus.
Distances
For this particular lens, the best focusing distances vary depending on the amount of zoom you wish to you. At the minimum (70mm) it is best to be at least four feet away from the object. Of course, this would have to be a smaller object, like flowers and such. A person at four feet away on the minimum zoom would actually give you little more than their head. Of course, at this distance, you CAN get the persons nose hairs just by zooming.
For best results, I've found that greater distances are better. When I'm still able to get a great close-up of my kids when they are at the other end of the block, I say it was a pretty good zoom feature.
But I mainly use this lens when it comes to football games or nature shots. Those great shots across the lake of a sunset are perfect for this lens. When in Tahoe, we found a great waterfall that was half-way up the mountain. With my 35-80mm lens, you would hardly notice it if you hadn't been looking for the waterfall. But with the 70-210mm, we were able to focus in directly on it and have a beautiful picture of the waterfall itself.
My Recommendation?
This lens may not be right for everyone. After all, there are those people who are perfectly happy with disposable cameras. For the photo-enthusiast ... this is a great lens to add to the collection. It opens up the possibilities for even greater photos to add to your collection.
