Pros: Pure, good price, helps my allergies
Cons: Only 1000 mg
If I could only take one supplement every day, it would be MSM. MSM stands for methylsulphonylmethane, and it is a sulfur that our bodies make naturally. Unfortunately, many of us are deficient in MSM and I am one of those individuals.
I am 57 years old and have suffered with seasonal allergies since I was 19. I am allergic to grass, trees and weeds - or as my husband says, I'm allergic to summer. I'm also allergic to molds, mildews and feathers.
I tell you the truth when I say I have tried everything under the sun to handle my summer allergies. I used to be miserable, feeling like I had a cold all summer long. If you have allergies, you know what I am talking about. The runny and stuffy nose, itchy eyes, itchy nose and even itchy ears, ugh! It's miserable, isn't it?!
After enduring years of allergy desensitization shots and trying all natural remedies, I finally found something that worked, and that is a supplement called MSM. 2000 mg a day seem to be the magic dose for me, and I take these every day starting in February of every year.
I've found it difficult to find MSM capsules in 2000 mg doses, but Life Flo does make them, and they are sold at Vitacost. Unfortunately, Vitacost charges unreasonable shipping rates to Alaska, so I bought my last bottles of MSM at Drugstore.com.
My last bottles of MSM were the Now brand, and their 1000 mg capsules come in a 120 count bottle that retailed for $7.99. The Life-Flo 2000 mg capsules come in a 60 count bottle and retail for $6.99. It was only $1 more to try the Now brand, since I have to take two of them to equal one of the Life-Flo.
The capsules are about 1" in length (the actual size is shown on the label), and they are filled with the white sulfur powder. I find them easy to swallow and they are working just as well as any other brands of MSM I've used over the past 10 years.
If you don't have allergies, MSM can still help you because they also aid in forming healthy cartilage and connective tissue. These are made in the USA, and are free of sugar, salt, starch, yeast, wheat, gluten, corn, soy, milk, egg and preservatives.
From My Bottle
MSM (Methylsulphonylmethane) is a natural form of sulfur found in all living organisms. This natural compound, researched since 1979, provides the chemical links needed to form and maintain numerous different types of tissues found in the human body, including connective tissues such as articular cartilage.* While MSM is a natural component of almost all fresh fruits, vegetables, seafood and meat, food processing methods reduce sulfur levels, making supplementation more important than ever. NOW® MSM is tested to meet a minimum 99.7% purity level.
These work! I would rather take one 2000 mg capsule than two 1000 mg capsules, but it's not that big of a deal because I take numerous supplements each day and one more is not an issue.
From what I have read, MSM works like a natural antihistamine because they can help control inflammation. I can't tell you exactly how MSM works for treating my allergies, but I can tell you they do exactly that. My doctor has been amazed that I'm not coming into her office to get cortisone "allergy shots", and she has been telling her patients about the benefits of MSM in relation to seasonal allergies.
Two years ago my husband, who works on computers every day, started to have severe pain in the thumb and first finger on his right hand. When he bumped his hand accidentally, he'd about go through the roof in pain. He even went to physical therapy but that didn't help much. I convinced him to start taking MSM and he also uses a MSM cream, and he feels so much better now. When he gets low on his MSM he always tells me so I can buy more of it, and he rarely complains about his hand pain any more!
The Now brand works as well as higher priced brands that I have purchased at GNC stores. I'd buy it again.
