Make Your Bladder More Functional: MSR spigot

Written: Aug 20 '04
Pros:Solid design, universal, make the bladder more functional.
Cons:Ergonomics are not the best.
The Bottom Line: This will make accessing your water at camp a little easier, but it is not a perfect solution.

I bought this as part of the shower adapter package because REI did not have the spigot available by itself. I was forced to spend an additional 5 dollars for the extra hose and shower adapter. Who knows, I may find I like to take showers instead of smelling like a dead snake, then again...
I was looking for the spigot adapter because I am displeased with the design of the 3-in-1 lid that came with the bladder. The 3-in-1 cap is a little difficult to use because the bladder is a little bulky. I feel the spigot is a good solution to this problem.

What is it?
This is an adapter the goes on any MSR water bladder. It makes the bladder more functional by giving the user an easier way of obtaining water from a dromedary bag.

How to use it
First you take off the 3-in-1 cap and fill the bladder with water. Screw the spigot cap on in place of the 3-in-1 cap. Hang the bag using the grommet or the strap. Turn the valve to the on position and use the water however you see fit.

How to get hot water
The dromedary bags can be placed into hot water and heated that way. It will heat the water in a few minutes and is a cheap alternative to the Coleman instant hot water unit.
Another option is to hang the bag in the sun. The light energy hits the black bag converting the light energy into heat energy. It will heat it up a few degrees but not as much as boiling. You can also use this method in your car for added heat. The car method can get the water over 120 degrees.

What MSR pouches does this work on?
MSR states that it works with every water bladder they produce. As long as you have the standard 2 inch opening on your pouch then you’re good to go. From looking at their website you can use the dromedary bags, the dromlite bags, hydromedary bags, and the cloudliner system. See their website for the specifics of each bag.

How easy is the spigot to use
I feel they sacrificed convenience to keep a design that is dependable. It is a little difficult to twist the handle of the spigot to the on position for two reasons. The first is the bag is not solid and therefore gives no resistance like a normal water container would (ex. The aquatainer.) The spigot handle is also small and therefore does not provide a great deal of leverage. These really are minor grips and not a concern when backpacking.

How well does the water come out.
Not very well. The flow rate is slow, actually just the same as the shower adapter. When it comes out it does not come out in a perfect stream like you would expect from a faucet. The water clings to the side of the tube and splatters a little. To solve this you may want to put a 3 inch plastic/rubber hose on the end of the spigot. I will be.

Flow rate estimates
Depending on angle and how much water you have, you can expect to use 4 ounces a second. Or…
4 seconds per cup
32 seconds per gallon.
84 seconds for 10 liters.

As the bag reduces in volume the pressure decreases and the flow rate decreases slightly.

Features I like
The spigot can be rotated so the outlet can be at any degree (but it can only spin around in a circle, not up and down.)
The handle of the spigot has clear labels that list ON and OFF.
There is a cap to keep the spigot itself from getting dust inside. The cap is very secure when put on.
It is a universal and proven design that will last.
It is all plastic and lightweight.
MSR’s hydration system is universal.

Weight and dimensions
Spigot weight: 1-1/8 oz
Cap width: 2-13/16th inch
Spigot width: 7/16th inch

My take on MSR
I always prefer to get REI or Northface gear whenever possible. But neither outfit carries everything I need. This is where MSR fits in. They generally make high end accessories like the dromedary bag that just cannot be matched by the other manufacturers. So if you are willing to spend the money then they are a good brand to buy. Also, MSR is one of the 5 brands that I highly recommend to avid campers.
If you are looking for their website you can find it at www.msrgear.com

Summary:
This is an adaptor for the MSR hydration system that adds a spigot to your dromedary bladder. This increases its usefulness and makes it easier to access water while at a campsite. The spigot works fine and is a solid design.
