I needed a new mower to replace my aging Simplicity. I did all the normal research. After visiting several dealers I narrowed it down to a John Deere, Simplicity, and Cub Cadet.
The Deere has several Japanese parts(transmission, engine, etc.)so that eliminated itself(I'm American so I support Americans). The Simplicity was very good and priced like the Cub Cadet. It just seemed that each feature on the Cub Cadet was just a little better(stronger frame, more cast iron parts, more powerful engine, etc.)
I was just kind of reluctant to purchase something from MTD. They make so many lower priced items for discount stores. I talked about this to the dealer. He assured me that just like Ford or General Motors, there are products of all kinds of features and quality. In other words Ford makes an Escort but also makes the Lincoln Navigator. He likes to refer to the Cub Cadet as the Cadillac of lawn tractors.
MTD has owned them for about 20 years now so after that I decided to go for it. That was the best move I made. It's a dream to drive and use. It has greasable bearings all over so they won't dry up and quit. The deck is so easy to slide out to change blades. It has a drive shaft and foot controls so you never have to take your hands off the wheel. This is the third season I've had it and have never had any problems with it. I highly recommend it!!!
