Yeah, I like the soapbox comments too--if you enjoy an artist, buy their stuff. Besides, maybe it's just me, but sometimes having the actual mass-produced mass-marketed CD with me, complete with packaging, booklet, and all, enhances my enjoyment of the music somehow. Streaming audio, no matter what the quality, just doesn't cut it.

As for this album, I saw the Unplugged on MTV2 and it was really impressive, though a lot of that was watching her display her feelings through her songs. Maybe I'll wait for a DVD version.

Great review!

though I didn't buy it yet, I heard part of the album at the record store and agree with what you said. Fans definitely need to pick this up, and enjoy L's continuing growth as an artist. -mad

You stated, "The reality is that Lauryn Hill is a changed woman, she’s not the same woman from The Fugees or even the same woman from The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill." I've listened to the CD and in reality Lauryn Hill is not the same.

I know many people will be turned off by this sound, but I dig it big time. I'll have a review up soon and it's more so positive, but obviously, you brought up everything I have questions about as well.

Her guitar play does get monotonous, but I just dig the feeling in her lyrics and voice.

Great job, and damn you for beating me to it.

I concur with the same grade but a low 3 a 2.75 maybe.

There is nothing wrong in having Obtuse lyrics. Contrary to popular and biased opinion, the african american lyrical tradition is based on that. From slave songs created so black folk could talk to each other without white folks understanding them. To the masterful double entendres of the blues, to the devastating gospel protest songs of the 40's and 50's to Ray Charles and aretha franklin bringing the language of the black church to popular music, to sly, to p-funk, to prince, to p.e- to rakin....i could go on and on.

But there is a difference between abstraction and songs that lauryn, lauryn and only lauryn can understand. Im glad you got mr intentional because i spent two hours trying to decode that damm song, and all i got was nonsense. When She does make sense she's profound. OH jerusalem and I gotta find peace of mind are breathtaking. But when she rambles on about such generric topics as the man and the system and freedom and Gives no depth and makes no sense that's when she loses me. Big time.

Plus I thought the Interludes showed a ugly pretentious side of her In calling artists who work 24-7 on their craft, fronting. That insulted perfectionists like Ray charles, stevie wonder, and marvin gaye.

I cant deny she show's an earth shattering potential and when she gets it all together she's transcendent. But IMO here is a case where free thought leads to a kind of self deception and abandoment of craft. But that's just me , Im an admitted soul snob.

But i still loved your review. You have a concice style that I just dig. and you made some points that make me rethink my ideas about the album.

Just thought I would actually leave you a comment since you left one for me. I completely agree we have been on each other WOT's for a long time and not left very many comments.

Your reviews are always very interesting to read and very well done.
