As you all know, there's always SOMETHING I'm unsure of in my reviews. It might be why the album or film doesn't work. It might be the information about a band. Here, its whether or not to recommend this album.
Usually its my heart reaching out to recommend and my more righteous mind saying no (I never go with my heart, its been pretty stupid lately), but here its my heart saying NO and my mind saying YES. The album has so much REPETITION and so many TERRIBLE LYRICS, but the music, like Korn's, is enjoyable when you actually decide to pop it in- but, it's not as enjoyable as Korn's. And the opening of this album (which I won't give away) is quite funny- and I didn't mention how cool the band looks (Wayne Static's crazy-@$$ hair style). I've also seen them on MTV walking around and talking, and they're a pretty cool group of guys, who knows what's real and knows how to make us laugh- like that their parents go to their shows, which is full of "hate" music. Now THAT'S funny. When I see bands like SOAD and Linkin Park interviewed, they're quite bleak and unfunny (even though Serj Tankian is really funny in concert).
So yeah, I like Static-X. And I'm even into some of their music- not to the level where I write STATIC-X IS THE COOLEST BAND IN THE F#$%ING WORLD all over my bookbag, which is the case with Weezer, but I can't really say they're bad- they're good for their type of music... for the most part.
Get to the Gone, the album's opener, is full of a somewhat-joking, great energy that makes me want to dance. I don't know why it makes me want to dance, it just does. Maybe its the energy. Damnit, there's another thing I'm unsure of. Yeah. I think its the energy. Energy makes me want to dance. Yeah.
And the lyrics for the song... suck. Take a look.
Get to the gone
Under the gun
Drop in drop out
Get to the gone
Get to the gone
It's just the way you wanna be
Under the gun
It's just the way to be
Drop in drop out
To begin with it's killing me
Killing the one thing
I know this to be
I fly I fly
Aroudn the world
Through the night sky
I feel the end
The end is near
Yeeeeeeah...
Following that is Permanence which has that old music cliche where the music starts out with a softer version of a tune, then goes into a heavier version, then another, and then there's vocals. The lyrics are better than most other songs, but the song has lesser quality than a lot of them as well.
Black and White is the song that really got me into Static-X, with its cool video and nu-metal catchy tune. It's great to listen to, and I still enjoy it today, but the lyrics SUCK more than any other:
Lost in my own world
Lost in my own world
Lost in my
Lost in my own world
Lost in my own world
Lost in my
Getting to the right
Getting to the wrong
Getting mine
Getting to the right
Getting to the wrong
Getting high
Yeeeeeah...
This is Not has a dopey title, but lyrics that come close to intelligent, until they start doing that stupid breaking off in the songs, making incomplete sentences and sort. Ex:
Dazed and burning state
Hazed and spinning fate
Dazed and burning
I say I can't come
The lyrics, as you can see, get dumber and dumber. However, the song remains enjoyable. Ostego Undead, which follows it, has the same dumb enjoyability, but the lyrics mucho-SUCK. Suck. I love that word.
Ostego
Ostego
Ostego
Ostego go
That pretty much sums it up.
Next come three horrendously bad songs... well, only two of them are HORRENDOUSLY bad, and the other one is just bad. Cold, the album's rightfully unpopular second single, has these simple lyrics:
We kiss
The stars
We writhe
We are
Your name
Desire
Your flesh
We are
Cold
We're so cold
We are so
Cold
We're so cold
Your mouth
These words
Silence
It turns
Humming
We laugh
My head
Falls back
Yeah, it sucks. Not only the lyrics; The music is also terrible. And Structural Defect goes for this Korn/Butthole Surfers mix sound that is just really bad and not-Static-X sounding. ...In a Bag has the dopiest name on the album, but a very promising, cool beginning. Then someone, when the chorus kicks in, and a few things after the chorus, the song dies out, and left me very disappointed.
Burn to Burn is just "okay" but at least redeems the album from its streak of badness. Of course, the lyrics are terrible. The chorus is horrible. But the greatness that comes along with that evens the song out to okay. And MACHINE, that song just kicks @$$. It has a very cool techno-rock beginning that seems to have an endless coolness, and while first stanza isn't too great, the chorus is very much alive, making us forget the dumb lyrics, and making us focus on the fast-paced, very cool sound. An awesome song, this is.
The album ends... on an odd note. The under-rated A Dios Alma Perdida is a wordless hard rock rant where it feels like the guitarists are just going on without means to end, and while the song is one that would get old with enough listenings, if you can moderate your hearings, the song is great to listen to. It seems to go on forever though...
And, sadly, I cannot recommend this album. The songs cannot maintain their good quality for long enough, and don't have the lasting quality that Audioslave's first album and Pinkerton have. This isn't the lasting-quality type of music, and because of that, its not worth buying. Sorry, kids.
