Cahill's Full Review: Roger Price and Leonard Stern - Mad Libs
Ahh, MADLIBS, how I have loved thee. For 40 years this book/game has been around and this edition has proved once and for all that it is indeed timeless. Not only is it a fun, cheap way to pass the time--it is also a way to learn your parts of speech and is adaptable for all ages.
What are MADLIBS?
MADLIBS is a game where you are given a story with blanks to fill in. Nouns, pronouns, adverbs, adjectives, person in room, fluid, body part… whatever it calls for. (If you don’t know what one of them is there is a run down of what an adverb is in the front of the book—after playing this game you’ll never for get that and adverb modifies a verb and usually ends in “ly.”)
There is one person with the book and calls out what they need to fill in the blanks, and the people playing call out words. When it’s finished the reader/recorder reads to story and everyone erupts in great fits of laughter.
What’s so good about this particular book?
This book takes the highlights from the last 40 years and packs it into one book. In the run of the mill editions, there are only 20 different games, in the 40th Anniversary edition, there are… you guessed it, 40! Twice as many, twice as much fun.
It’s too simple to be true!
But it is! It is! My friends and I usually get quite dirty with our choice of words—us youngens are jest askin’ fer trouble. It’s a great game for car trips of camping trips for something to do. It’s portable and something anyone can play. This game is credited with saving my sanity on long cross-country bus trips when hangman has lost it’s charm.
How much will this cost me? Where can I find them
MADLIBS books run about $4.00 US give or take a few cents. I found mine in B. Dalton Books in the children’s section. They can also be located in the humor section. And just because it’s labeled for kids doesn’t mean the adults can’t enjoy it to.. we can just use bigger and dirtier words!
Epinions is so (verb ending in “ing”). I don’t think I’ll ever (verb, present tense) again. I will (verb) until my (body part, plural) turn (color)!!
