marvienhill's Full Review: Roger Price and Leonard Stern - Mad Libs
I love mad libs, and this book is great! 40 great years of word play. I was first introduced to them in middle school. Everyday my English teacher would make everyone in class take part in one. It was probably the best part of the day. I learned something, and at the same time I was laughing. What a great game. To fully understand what a mad lib is you must first read one. Once this is done, you'll be addicted. I've invited my friend Billy Bob to participate in this exercise.
MARVIEN'S EXAMPLE OF A MAD LIB TO GET YOU TO BUY MAD LIBS 40TH ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION (As always I have come up with a clever, and sophisticated title)
In mad libs the reader asks the person playing to choose a noun, verb, adverb, adjective, suffix, or prefix. Once they choose, the reader puts them into a story. Hopefully the player has chosen words that will make the story funny.
Just in case you forgot what they were,
Noun: a person, place, or thing
Adjective: a descriptive word
Adverb: descriptive word that modifies a noun
Suffix: part that comes at the end of a word
Prefix: part that comes at the beginning of a word
MARVIEN: Ok Billy Bob are you ready?
Billy Bob: Sure thing, just let me take this raccoon out of my mouth. Ok lets get at it.
Marvien: I'll need a two nouns, two adjective, and two verbs.
Billy Bob: No problem, just let me check the above section first. Ok my two nouns are shot-gun and whiskey. My two adjectives are sticky and freaky. I'll pick shot and skin(the act of skinning) as my two verbs.
Marvien: Ok let me tell the story.
The Two boys set off that Tuesday morning to see their Grandmother, and they took her a (noun) shot-gun. Grandma opened the door and said my you look (adjective) sticky. Good enough to eat. One of the little boys replied, "You look (adjective) freaky Grandma!" She quickly invited them in, and gladly accepted the shot-gun. "Why I made you boys a cool cup of (noun) whiskey." The two boys sat down, and drank up. "Ugh!" The boys were quite disgusted by what Grandma had fixed them. They quickly (verb) shot her, and (verb) skinned her from top to bottom. That night the boys had a great big laugh over what had happened. Boy did they love their Grandma.
There you have it the wonderful world of mad libs. If you didn't enjoy my version of mad libs, don't let that keep you from buying this book. The stories they create are usually a bit better. This game is worth the money.
This book is by Leonard Stone, one of the great mad lib writers, and was published a couple of years ago. If your kids are bored of playing video games or if your just tired of them sitting around watching tv, hand them this wonderful book. It teaches them at the same time. They learn the fundamentals of the English language, and have a good time while doing it.
Literature combined with entertainment.
This is a must get book. Rush out to your local store and pick this up right now. All the cool people are doing it. Fit in, and just do it.
