Ravenskya's Full Review: Roger Price and Leonard Stern - Mad Libs
I remember Madlibs from elementary school. My teacher (Mrs. Veal if I remember correctly) would select one and at the end of our daily English lesson she would stand at the front of the class and help us through filling one out together. I remember thinking that these were the funniest things I had ever heard.
In case you are unfamilar with Madlibs they are essentially one page stories (most around 100 words long), with key words left out. Where those words should have been were blank spaces that had "Noun" or "Verb" written below them. One person asks another, or a group of people (preferably children) to come up with a "noun" or "verb" or "Person's Name" and they fill in the blanks, thusly personalizing the story and usually making it rather funny.
The Good Aspects:
1)Cheap, most books are under $3
2)Helps children learn grammar
3)Can be an entertaining classroom tool
4)Good for road trips
5)Easy to create your own
The Not So Good Aspects:
1)Excellent method for unsupervised children to teach eachother new profanities
2)Only the first one or two are funny, then it loses it's amusement power (so although great on road trips... bring other toys as well)
3)Do Not give these to teenagers... either they will become dirty jokes or they will be bored.
4)There aren't very many in one book, so you'll have to buy several if your children like them.
All in all these are a great way to pass the time while teaching your children grammar. Just be sure to keep the age group in mind while purchasing them.
Also... if you look them up on the internet there are several places you can download them for free.
