Freak369's Full Review: Maglite Flashlight 2 D-Cell
Ive owned several different sized Mag-Lites over the years; they have all been dependable and served me well. When I needed a larger flashlight that would be able to operate for long periods of time I faced a real dilemma; go with Mag-Lite and deal with the weight issue or something cheaper that would eventually break or stop working. In the end I picked the Mag-Lite [2 x D size battery version] because I knew that it would be something that would work even under the most extreme of circumstances. Make no mistake about it, this thing is heavy, with the batteries in place it weighs a good two to three pounds so make sure you know that before you purchase this. If you need something to take with you on a walk then please, opt for something lighter unless you plan on using this as a self defense type thing as well as a flashlight.
2 D Cell Sized Mag-Lite Flashlight
Measuring ten inches in length, this is the perfect size for anyone that needs a sturdy and dependable flashlight. Mag-Lite makes ones that are smaller and larger than this so if this size isnt something that appeals to you, there are other options available. I keep this one in the kitchen for when I need to take out the trash; long story short, I was surprised one night when something was scurrying around by the trash cans. It wasnt a cat - it moved to slow, it wasnt a skunk or raccoon - theres no wooded areas near us. Since I had no idea what was out there I opted to leave the trash inside and wait for daybreak. When I went outside the next morning the lids were off the cans, the bags were ripped open and whatever was digging through them left me with one hell of a mess to clean up. If it could get into a garbage can and forage for food, there was no way I was going to go out there without something to protect me. Now I kick open the screen door with some Rambo-like move, bang the flashlight on the aluminum doorframe and make my presence known to whatever might be lurking. Thats the beauty of this flashlight, no matter what I do to it - it keeps on working.
The heavy metal construction of it allows it to use used where plastic flashlights would break or crack, if you drop it, it will bounce around a little and may get a few scratches but these are designed to withstand a lot of use and abuse without any type of failure. One of the things that I really like about this is that there is a huge textured grip area [about two and a half inches] in the center of it. No matter how you hold or grip this, you can have a firm grasp on it even with wet, soiled or oil covered hands. This isnt something that kids should be allowed to use or play with and the only reason for that is the weight of it. Ive dropped this on my feet a few times and while it doesnt hurt all that much, if a small child dropped it on their foot, they would be in a lot more pain. Beside that, kids will be kids and they will goof around, if they accidentally hit someone with this, it could be a pretty bad situation.
It throws a good bit of light but honestly, I have no idea what the exact amount is. Its enough that I can shine it a good ten feet away and see everything in the path of the light clearly. You can adjust the strength and intensity [a tight bright light or a more wide open one] by adjusting the lens. This is something that has since stopped working due to dropping it several times and the scratches on the face of the flashlight. I can still turn it and make some minor changes in the intensity but it isnt working as well as it did when I first purchased it. The two D sized batteries last a fairly good time, even when used for long periods of them but the actual amount of life you get out of them depends on which brand you purchase. I go with something on an industrial level so I know that when I reach for this, the batteries will be ready to go.
The on and off button is sealed in rubber and is easy to operate; I hate flashlights that have a flat button that needs to be slid up or down because eventually they wear out. This makes a loud clicking noise when you turn it off or on but its not something that is going to drive you crazy. About the only downside to this is that when you go to change the batteries the cover makes this horrendous noise as you twist it off. Maybe its just the one that I have, maybe I need to clean out the grooves - whatever it is, its a sound that is worse than fingernails on a chalkboard. When you do go to change the batteries take care that the rubber ring is replaced, this prevents moisture from getting inside the flashlight and prevents over tightening of the cover.
You can pick this up in a variety of colors; I went with the red one because, well, I dont know why exactly. The only other color choices at the time were black and blue and I knew they if I needed to use this outside at night the chances of me losing track of it would greatly increase if I picked a darker shade. I got this at Target for $13.99 which is a great price, most of the time these sell for $15.99 and higher but you have to keep in mind that you are getting one of the best flashlights on the market and Mag-Lite stands behind their products 100%. A nice perk to this is that there is a spare bulb housed inside the battery compartment [tucked in foam inside the metal coil], I havent had to change the bulb yet but its nice to know that its there if its needed.
The Bottom Line
I feel completely safe when I have to go outside at night; while it may be a little heavy to carry around I know that if someone jumps out of the bushes or some rabid woodland creature tries to spring an attack on me - a few well placed whacks with this will send them scampering off in a hell of a lot of pain. If you need to use this as something to protect yourself, grab the end with the lens [its wider than the body of the flashlight] and hit whatever needs an attitude adjustment. Since this is made of metal and has some weight behind it [thanks to the batteries] you will be able to inflict some pain and distract whatever or whomever is bothering you. This isnt a toy nor is it something that kids should be allowed to use - I already mentioned that but hey, it cant hurt to say it again.
