Pros: Easy to operate, inexpensive, most of the basic features and a few extras
Cons: Poorly written manual, no maps, no altitude profile
The Bottom Line: If you're looking for an inexpensive GPS with most of the features of the higher end unit, the GPS315 probably fits your bill.

| darogers's Full Review: Magellan GPS 315 Handheld GPS Receiver |
While the new GPS units have color and faster acquisition the GPS315 still has it's niche. The GPS 315 is probably one of the least expensive and most readily available units out there (if you're willing to buy one used). There are always units on eBay for a good price and most of the accessories are also available at a good price. If you want a GPS that has most of the basic features and not have to worry every time you drop it, the GPS315 is for you. With the appropriate cable you can connect the GPS315 to your PC and upload/download points of interest, waypoints, routes, and track logs. Since the GPS315 has been around for so long most of the free software on the internet (i.e. GPS Trackmaker) is compatible. Unfortunately Magellan is no longer supporting the GPS315 so if you have any problems you'll probably have to trade it in.
The GPS315 also has a couple of other features that aren't common on other units like moon & sun rise/set times for any position. It also has ideal hunting & fishing times for your location. I'm not sure how they derive this information but it could be useful if you're a hunter or fisherman.
Unfortunately you can't download maps to this model only waypoints so if you want a GPS that shows all of the roads in the area, you'll have to invest more money. The unit will show you a track of where you've been though, so if you go on a hike you can always follow the track back the way you came. You can also store those tracks to a computer for future reference and if you want to look at the altitude profile of the mountain you just climbed (must have additional software like GPS Trackmaker). Another downside to the unit is while it will show you your tracklog and tell you your current altitude it won't show you an altitude profile on screen.
