| skull99's Full Review: Magellan GPS Companion for the Palm m500 |
I have been using GPS via laptop or Palm IIIC for several years now. I was getting tired of wires strung everywhere in the vehicle from External GPS connectors, etc. I also have been using DeLorme's mapping software and the maps have been getting consistently larger in size and detail so the 8MB Palm IIIC memory, was not enough.
The Palm M515 mounts to the Magellan Companion with little effort. The Rand McNally mapping software supplied with the unit lacks options, so I continued to use Delorme's Street Atlas 2003 with X-Map Handheld add on. (Note Street Atlas is much more updated than buying Just the Xmap only version, so get both. $70 or so)
I also purchased from the Magellan Store the Companion windshield mount and power adapter. This makes a sweet combination, it's actually where I can see it now without looking away from driving and the DC adapter supplies the Palm and GPS with power for unlimited battery time while driving. This is a pleasant change ! With Delorme's software, custom routes and turn by turn directions are a breeze. The unit beeps 30 seconds prior to turns. Maps are detailed and zoomable.
The GPS detects much faster and performs much better than the external devices I have been using. It looks like I will get the canvas case too. Purchase DeLorme's Topo map add on and the unit becomes a GPS for hunting, fishing and hiking. Battery Time is about 6 hours or so on fresh GPS batteries and full palm charge. Make sure backlight is turned off when using batteries, it saves alot.
After using the unit on a recent 2100 mile trip I am impressed by the mounting abilities and performance of the unit. I placed it just below the rear view mirror, very little if any vision problems and the performance is very good. It also worked well in the field hunting. I marked the
camp spot and found my way back after dark with little effort. Delorme Topo USA is needed for outdoor hunting/sporting GPS use.
