| elmoebeesn's Full Review: Magellan Map 410 |
I recently bought this portable computerized map at my local electronics shop. Basically, it's supposed to tell its owner where he or she is on the road at any time and to also give an indication as to which route to take on long trips. I have found that the Magellan is very hard to use and will get you lost in a hurry.
Here's an example. One time while driving through a very secluded and remote section of St. Louis(unfamiliar territory for me)I had the urge, as many motorists do, to use the nearest restroom. I decided what better way to test out my new Magellan Map than to use it to find a major part of the city where I could accomplish this restroom usage task. I soon found this to be one of the worst mistakes I have ever made! The Magellan Map directions actually took me farther away from the city center than I already was into some farm country. Needless to say there were no restrooms around(other than the local cow pasture) and I almost burst! Luckily for me I was able to flag down a passing motorist who was kind enough to help me out. I found the restroom eventually with his help; however, I was very displeased with the Magellan Map I had purchased.
I have since used the map a great deal more(reluctantly after my first experience) and have found that it does have some positive features. These include the facts that it shows you your time, speed, approximate position on the road, and it has a compass built in. These features usually are helpful and workable, but the fun and the accuracy ends there.
The problems with the Magellan are many. First of all, I have noticed on several occasions that the directions it gives are inaccurate. Sometimes these directions are so terrible that the owner will become completely lost if they are followed. This makes the trip planning feature awful as well because if simple directions can't be trusted then how can the owner count on it for trips. Furthermore, the Magellan has a mileage indicator to let the owner know how far they are away from a destination and how fare they have travelled. This is also almost always incorrect. To sum up, the Magellan looks fancy and has some nice features, but all in all it doesn't get the job done.
