llarge24's Full Review: Magellan Meridian Platinum Handheld GPS Receiver
I purchased a Meridian Marine two years ago. In the first season, the unit had an intermittent problem with the battery power supply. I returned the unit to the dealer, who sent it away to be repaired.
At the end of the second season, it seemed to be slow in acquiring satellites. And then in March this year when I tried to use it in the Caribbean, it wouldn't acquire any satellites. So I took it back the to dealer again. This time the repair was going to cost me $125.00. I said to forget the repair. It'll be cheaper in the long run to buy GPS unit that works more reliably.
The Magellan comes with a DB9 plug for the computer interface. Not much good with newer laptops that only have USB ports. Of course you could buy an adapter cable but they aren't cheap.
The Magellan charts are good but you can only load one chart at time, regardless of how big the SD card is. If you venture outside the area of the loaded chart, you've got to hook up the PC and load the next needed chart. This is real pain in the back side. Entering waypoints with a PC is not too intuitive. I ended up writing macros to assist with the job.
Needless to say, I'm turned off with Magellan. Many of the dealers in the Toronto area now refuse to carry the Magellan product line because of the many problems with the units.
