glhowelljr's Full Review: Magellan Triton 1500 Handheld GPS Receiver
This was a Christmas gift to me from my wife. She did quite a bit of homework to search out this particular unit & on paper it lived up to it's billing.
In the box was the following: GPS Unit, 5 extra styluses, two batteries. No instructions, software or USB cable. As if that was not enough, there was nothing listed on-line to assist with this. I hoped to see a posting to the effect of "Some Magellan 1500 items did not contain their accessory packets" with directions to obtain them.
I initially went to Radio Shack because they had a 30 day return policy & I wanted it on record that there were items missing. Because they stopped selling the items, the suggested I talk with one of the local stores for assistance - the run-around, right? Well, not quite exactly. The Rep at the store was very helpful, he just ran into a brick wall with Magellan. He was able to get me emails and phone numbers for Magellan contacts that he had left messages for so I could pester as well.
Three days after my first call to Radio Shack, I was given a Magellan "Account Number" for my missing items and a promise of a return call that day with the status of the missing Accessories. No call.
Two days later, I called back. First - it took me seven calls to get someone - then when I finally was connected to a rep, she noted that they had the account, did not have a problem sending the accessories, but that I had to call them back again two days later to request the accessories. This was unacceptable.
The next call was to Radio Shack to return the item. They complied without ANY questions.
Before I returned it, I was able to configure the unit as it came in the box and play with it a little. It seemed to respond well to indoor and cloudy conditions - so from a GPS standpoint it was OK. Another disappointment was the pre-loaded maps. Expect a map with Interstates, Cities and bodies of water - only if the bodies are the size of the "Great Lakes" or bigger. No rivers or any other roadways. For the price of the unit, it should have been more usable out of the box. I've since purchased a Delorme PN-20 - hopefully, I have a better experience with it.
One side note - I could tell the Call Center was not a Domestic US Call Center - but unlike other posters, I do not see that as the issue. All of the reps that I talked to were polite & understandable - but if Magellan places them in a position where they cannot help you - it is Magellan that should take the blame, not the Call Center.
