After the Virtual Eyes disaster, I’m not sure what lead me to try Physician’s Formula again. Oh wait, yes I do. And acquaintance had dental surgery that left her face black and blue around the eyes. She got Physician’s Formula Magic Cube and it covered her bruises enough that she didn’t feel the need to don a burka. I thought, hmm I have dark circles under my eyes, I bet it would help. I have always had circles under my eyes. They’re suspiciously like the circles under my mother’s and sister’s eyes. I have always used Revlon concealer in dead girl pale, but I was nearly out. So I ventured out to the Walgreen’s and got myself a Magic Cube.

The Magic Cube is a clear plastic cube with a cube of color floating in the middle of it. You can purchase it in yellow to mask purple marks or green to mask red marks. Supposedly it’s transparent enough that the skin color shows through and the colors cancel one another out. A color theory it holds, in practice something else happens.

But back to the packaging. It’s a very small cube, making it very difficult to open. I have pretty small hands, but there’s always some struggle getting the thing open. And once you open it? That is the disappointment really starts to kick in. Open the cube and half of it is make up and the other half is a uselessly small mirror. Essentially it feels like a cheat from the moment you open it.

But the disappointment doesn’t stop there because then you put it on and you look like you’ve put on war paint. It’s not so much transparent as like flat latex wall paint, only not as liquid. I blended to the best of my abilities and showed my husband. He said,

"What’s that yellow stuff on your face?"

The concealer is about as concealing as wearing hunter's camoflage in the baby department of Kmart.

I have tried on a few occasions to apply it so that it doesn’t look like stage make up that needs to be visible to the back row of a very large theater, but to no avail. I always end up washing my face and digging out the remaining nub of my Revlon concealer or deciding that my dark circles just aren’t that dark today.

It’s expensive, hard to open and doesn’t work. I’d have been better off to give the money I spent on this to a bum. In your case, I urge you to stick to old reliable, what ever it is.
