I recently added extra Magnesium to my long list of vitamins and other nutrients that I take on a daily basis. I was told by a friend of mine who is a physical Education teacher that it works wonders for leg cramps and pains. I figured, why not let me give it a try, and wonder of wonders, it really works for me.
The leg cramps I get are from stenosis of the spine,a condition that I have which is a narrowing of the spinal column due to Osteo-arthritis, the pain used to be so bad it was getting really hard to do my walks and other forms of exercise that are an important part of my life. Since I started to take magnesium I really have noticed a difference in the severity of my pain.
Along with the capsule I take daily, I try to incorporate Magnesium into my daily diet. One such way is to add honey to the foods I eat.
We all know sugar is not as good for you as it tastes but, this alternative is healthy as well as delicious.
Since this is National Honey Month I thought I would write a little bit about it.
A recent review of scientific literature revealed that honey contains antioxidants and of course a wide array of vitamins, minerals and amino acids. Magnesium being one of them. Others are niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid, calcium, copper, iron, manganese, phosphorous, potassium and zinc. Many of these are just trace amounts but, they do add up.
Using honey in place of other sweeteners makes good nutritional sense. Since honey contributes to the overall intake of a persons recommended nutrients and other sweeteners, such as refined sugar, along with the artificial stuff, offer nothing , wouldn't you think it makes good sense to use honey instead?
Several amino acids, the building blocks of protein, are also contained in honey.
Honey is a natural mixture of the simple sugars glucose and fructose. The body absorbs glucose and fructose quickly and both provide the body with energy rapidly. Also a source of simple carbohydrates it is useful as part of a well balanced diet in providing fuel to working muscles..
Maybe that's one of the reasons I have a better workouts since eating more honey, I don't know if it's because I'm adding more magnesium by using honey or just a combination of everything I do but, I really have a noticed a great improvement in the way I feel during and after my walks or my time at the gym.
So, if you notice you have leg cramps you didn't have a few years ago when you were younger or, if you just have leg cramping for whatever reason, I would recommend using Magnesium and adding honey to your diet....It couldn't hurt!!
One tablespoon of honey contains: 64 calories,17 grams carbohydrates..
