| babypod's Full Review: Magnesium |
I spent six years in college to become a dietitian. I completed an internship and passed the exam to become a registered dietitian (I can put RD after my name now). I worked for over a year as a dietitian, and then I became a mom. Now, that is what I do, but I don’t want to forget all the information I worked so hard to learn, thus I was very happy to see that epinions had started this section about vitamins and minerals. I have tried most of them at one point or another.
I was asked a while back to write a review or give some info about magnesium. I am sorry it took me so long to create this.
Magnesium is important for a few reasons. Magnesium helps make up bone structure. Magnesium is also important to make up cell membranes. This is like the skin that surrounds the cells in your body. Magnesium is also important for enzyme reactions to occur.
There are some signs that you may be deficient in Magnesium. Some of those include nausea, vomiting, appetite loss, muscle weakness, spasms, tremors, personality changes, and hallucinations. These could be symptoms of other things so you should never self diagnose a Magnesium deficiency.
Magnesium is found naturally in many foods. Most people who have a normal appetite do not need this supplement. Magnesium is found in Nuts, legumes, cereal grains, soybeans, parsnips, chocolate, blackstrap molasses, corn, peas, carrots, seafood, brown rice, parsley, lima beans and spinach.
I took Magnesium for two months. In that time I noticed no difference in how I felt. With that I would not suggest a normal healthy person to take this supplement. If you have certain illnesses that cause an increased need for Magnesium and your doctor suggests you to take it, go ahead, but other wise you probably don’t need it. I am philosophically opposed to getting nutrients through supplements, for food is a much better source. I have never really heard of a Magnesium toxicity, but just because I have never heard of it does not mean that it doesn’t exist.
