I think that's a reasonable response. The inclusion of one element that doesn't fit is like a rock on a roller skating rink. At best, it throws you off track.
Neil Jordan has done something similar with his otherwise exceptional novel Shade. He includes George Bernard Shaw as a character among those he has created. At first it seemed merely pointless, but eventually I resented GBS' inclusion too. It took me out of a narrative in which I'd been engaged and left me concerned that each time he left the story, he might come back.
