cddull's Full Review: John Feinstein - A March to Madness: The View from...
I first met John Feinstein (not in person but his writing) when I read Season on the Brink about Bob Knight and the Indiana basketball program. Feinstein's sense of detail can pull you right into very complex stories and make you feel like you truly know the people in his books. This book is too broad to have that same intense personal feeling but is nonetheless very enjoyable. You get a good view of nine teams instead of intimate knowledge of one.
The ACC is the granddaddy of basketball leagues and filled with some of the best known coaches and programs. Mr. Feinstein lets us into each of these places and gives us a view that we otherwise could never develop.
Be aware John went to Duke and bleeds Duke Blue throughout the book. I had to go read Dean Smith's own book to get to know him much at all:)
As opposed to books written by athletes or coaches this book and others by Feinstein have wonderful narrative. There is definitely a writer's touch.
If you aren't a hoops lover you probably will get lost here, but if you are like me and love October til March as the best time of the year, read this book.
