If you don't see 8 foot long tuna in front of you, or huge grouper circling around you, this should be the gun for you.
This is not for the deep-sea spearfisherman. I'd say it's more for the moderate-sea fisherman, hunting fish of up to 50-60 lbs (I successfully shot a 60 lb ling w/ no problems). If you're up for pursuing larger fish, you may want to go with a longer-barreled triple sling gun.
The pneumatic gun is often ridiculed by dyed-in-the-wool slingers. Personally for me, using it out in the Gulf of Mexico is just fine for the fish I'm after (snapper, ling, etc). It's quick loading, positively buoyant, and darn sharp looking, too. It does the job I need for it, and if I ever decide I need more power, I can kick it up another 10 atmospheres beyond the factory-loaded 30 atm.
If you're small in stature, this may be a little bit too much for you, as to load the shaft you have to force the spear back into the barrel using the attached loading accessory. Higher ATM's means that it will take more force--and to do it on land isn't the same as doing it while sitting on a rig. So, you can get away with letting some of the power out; however, this also decreases the size of fish you'll be able to send the shaft completely through.
Non-use-wise, I found this gun easy to clean, easy to maintain, and it even comes in an attractive case that my fellow SFers were asking about. I have had no problems with it so far, though I have only shot it about 30 times.
I must say that I am extremely pleased with the gun; I had much more of a problem battling the current than working the gun, which by the way is the first gun I've ever owned. I am quite confident you'll be pleased with the 970, and if you're not after too big of fish, you'll find all the power you need in the Cyrano.
