| sea__wong's Full Review: Mares MR22 Abyss |
The Mares MR22 Matched First and Second Stage Regs came in a variety of options, Ruby, Titanium, regular. An Axis Alternate ( Octopus) was commonly teamed with them. The diaphrams are large "old -school" style allowing easy servicing and easy breathing at most recreational depths.
History
I've had a set of Mares MR22's for 18 months now and dived mostly with them , on the odd occasion when renting I've really missed them.
My Dive Profile
Padi Open > Advanced > Nitrox Certified
TDI Nitrox 40% Certified
Yoke style First Stage
Typical Dive
10>40 m Nitrox in 15 >25 degree C
Over view
I like the no fiddle feature, nothing to adjust and nothing to break. They are a great set for what I do, allow you to breath and enjoy the dive.
The Second stage is a little heavy in the mouth and the first stage is a heavy construction , but then I've seen newer plastic composite regs get crushed on dive boats on rough days.
My alternate (octopus) is an axis, and I've noticed that the diaphram pressure can be varied minutely by rotating the cover. This results in a free flow tendency. The MR22 on the other hand is a screw fixed peripheral clamp.
Things to consider
Think about how you use the regs as a first step , then
How you transport and clean and service.
You will want to clean your regs! so find out how up front,
Talk to a maintenance guy about the servicing issues, ask about dry and wet valves.
Most new regs are great value, but you use them will they provide good old reliability ? And can you get them serviced when you need to.
Pros
1. Easy to Service
2. Easy to Use
3. solid Bras Construction
Cons
1. Heavy
2. Heavy
3. Large Intermediate Hose may be hard to replace in remote areas.
( but then you'd just rent/ borrow another whole set)
Recomendation
I paid $500 US for mine , I highly recommend them
at the moment they are a bargain in the mid $200's
