I heard great things about Margie's Candies and decided to go for the first time on probably the worst night of the year - July 4th.
I came across numerous problems, many of which I don't think would be rectified on a less hectic night.
Firstly, parking. There is only limited street space and no off-street parking. Well, there is but you risk getting towed away.
Upon entering the front door we were not greeted by staff but people who standing around. I wasn't sure if they were in line for sitting down or in line for take out. Either way, there was a lot of confusion and not a lot of organization. Not one staff member asked me what I was there for - dine in or take out. I had to ask them and even then, I wasn't greeted with a friendly nor helpful reply.
The waiter had lost his list of people waiting for a seat so, needless to say, some people got in before others. This wasn't going to happen to me, so I spoke up and demanded the next free table be ours.
So, having got seated and picked out what I wanted I scanned the diner and the one thing that really stood out was that the dining area was really small and cramped. I advise they get rid of the counter of memorabilia that is in the middle of the room and place the items on shelves of on the walls, therefore, freeing up space on the floor for additional seating.
The memorabilia consisted of old albums and other odds and ends from the sixties and seventies. The booths were also from that era with small juke-boxes (which no longer are able to be used) sitting on the table too.
I ordered a banana split which came in a whole clam-shaped bowl but really didn't look full. I had one scoop of vanilla, one scoop of chocolate and one scoop of strawberry ice cream along with a banana, cream, wafers and some hot fudge on the side.
Sounds like a lot but it really wasn't.
Firstly, the ice cream melted really quickly. Were they so busy that night that they didn't put it back in the freezer or are the freezers not kept at a cold enough temperature? I personally don't like to see ice cream melting after only a few minutes. And by melting I mean, completely melted.
And, just to back track a little. The scoops weren't all that big either. Just your standard size scoop, in my opinion.
On a more positive note, the pricing is pretty reasonable and the variety on the menu is quite vast. There is a lot to choose from and many of the items can feed more than one person, if that's your choosing. If you're a regular ice cream eater than you'd probably never be bored nor have to order the same item twice. Another thing is the memorabilia that surrounds you. It's a classic diner setting but it came across as cluttered and didn't appeal to me.
I thought maybe this was a bad experience due to the fact they were so busy but realistically that's no excuse. The standard of the food shouldn't drop if you are busy and if this wasn't the case for them, then their standard to begin with isn't very high.
I've thought about going again to see if I can have a more pleasant experience but I just don't think it's worth it. Sometimes your first impression is the right impression.
