Rated a Very Helpful Review
Pros:great military story/very gripping and realistic
Cons:i don't like the way this story ended
This book definitely captured my attention. When I heard about a sniper that was so good that he got 93 confirmed kills. I love war stories and this was no exception. This amazing story story about the best marine sniper of all time was truly a great story by Charles Hathcock. This suspenseful book kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through. It was so good that I read it all in one night and I have never done that before.

This is a story about a marine sniper and his life. Not really his total life but his life as a marine and how his career ended. It was a great story but had a bad ending. Not because it was written bad but because it was so sad. A man is lucky to maneuver through through Vietnam without ever being shot but gets seriously injured when his vehicle is hit with a explosive. Even though he is injured that didn't stop him from shooting. He tried so desperately to rehabilitate after his injury but he never could fully recover. That didn't stop him from leaving either. The marine core had to let him go because his condition was becoming worse.
It is amazing how many good parts can come out of a book that is full of killing. There are dozens of great stories. My favorite is when he took three days to successfully navigate through a 1200 yard area with no cover and go past several patrols without being seen. This required tremendous patience and determination. And when he was finally in range he picked off a man from 800 yards away despite his weariness and also made it out alive. This is just one of the great parts of this story.
Not only did this man accomplish so much as a man. He also was able to promote a sniper training program that was one of the reasons that the war was easier even though that we had to withdraw in Vietnam
This man was truly a amazing man. Even though he got 93 confirmed kills in reality he probably over 100 at least. I wonder if this book has become a movie and if it hasn't it really should. People who don't have the attention span to read would really like this movie too. It is funny that even though we didn't win Vietnam that it still feels like it because when you read this story. This is one of the great stories that makes me feel proud to be a American and I hope it does that same for you.
