gator5551's Full Review: Marmot Helium Sleeping Bag
In my opinion this is hands down the very best 3 seasons backpacking bag on the market. I have been backpacking for 30+ years I started at 7 years of age with Coleman products, joined the boy scouts at 12, went through to 18 and I still back pack today with hopes of thru hiking the applachian trail some times. Infact I have been gearing up for the applachian trail with the lightest most comfortable gear I can find. I have had sleeping bags from Coleman,North Face,Sierra Designs,Western Mountainerring, and Slumber Jack. In my opinion marmot has them all beat and this is why. (1) The helium is the lightest most confortable bag on the market with a 15 degree temperature rating it is close to accurate I am a cold sleeper so it is good for me down to 25 degrese which is what I want. Anything colder than that I pull out my 0 degree bag. I have very broad shoulders and a 46 inch chest so I had to buy the long for the 64 inch girth which fits me perfectly except for the length, but I put my clothes in there to warm them up for the next morning. (2) marmot has the most comfortable face muff on the market in my opinion. If you like comfort as much as I, then cynching up the face muff on this bag is no problem. On my western mountaineering badger I couldn't cynch it up tight because it would dig in to my skin and hurt so I would have to leave it loose which would lose a lot of heat in the bag. (3) This is the lightest bag for that class on the market with a perfect cut and it stuffs down to not much bigger than the size of a loaf of bread making more room in my pack thus requiring a smaller lighter pack ; ). (4) Its water proof to a point, the material is water proof and breathable but the seams are not but I use 2 different tents a wonderlust 2-4-2 for 3 seasons 1lb 13 ozs and a stephensons wormlite 2r 2lb 13 ozs for 4 seasons they are great tents very light and water proof so I dont need a totally water proof bag. (5) There is plenty of room to move around in the bag I hate bags that are so constrictive you can't hardly move in them and the 900 down puffs up great and expands well making for a lot of loft which is what you need for warmth in cold weather (6 )This bag has a face muff that you cinch down tight, and a draft tube at the zipper that dosen't allow cold air to seep through the zipper. In sumation if you want the lightest most comfortable bag for 3 seasons backpacking this is it no need to look any further you want beat this bag.
