| illuminatrix's Full Review: Marmot Osprey Jacket |
(This review is for Marmot’s Cervino jacket, while their current version is the Cervino II. The Cervino II takes care of my one complaint about the Cervino.)
OK, so it’s not Gore-Tex. It’s MemBrain.
What’s the difference? It’s hard to tell. MemBrain seems to have all the waterproof capabilities that Gore-Tex does, without that crinkly stiffness you’ve probably come to know and hate. It’s really quite soft, and I find it to be much more comfortable. Marmot’s claim is that MemBrain “breathes” more as it heats up, and I can’t argue: This is one comfortable jacket!
The design is everything I’ve come to expect from Marmot – I’m a big fan of theirs, and for good reason: Their clothing and gear is all high quality and very fairly priced, and their customer service should set the standard.
The Cervino truly is one of the best all-purpose shells around. I can throw it on as a rain jacket to run around town, or wear it skiing in Telluride. The design is (almost) flawless: roomy pockets, the essential “pit zips”, adjustable drawstring waist, tight snow skirt, good zippers, big Velcro tabs at the front opening and around the wrists… The hood is exceptionally well-designed, with a nylon inner hood that can be tightened close around your face and neck (with an elastic drawstring) while the outer visor part protects your eyes from wind and snow. My one complaint is that the hood zips off. This is irrelevant, though, on the Cervino II, as the hood on the newer version tucks away.
If you’re looking for a jacket you can take everywhere (it’s so light!) and wear anywhere (it looks great!), I’d say this is it. And if you’ve been put off by the price of Gore-Tex, give MemBrain a try. It’s less expensive and I really don’t think there’s any trade-off in functionality. (I’d even say it’s better, personally!)
